Chapter 9: The Brother Who Came Back

The man standing outside our house looked nothing like Marcus.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Marcus was calm.

Steady.

The kind of person who made others feel safe.

His brother looked like someone carrying years of anger.

He stared through the doorway.

Then looked at me.

Then at Nia.

“So that’s her.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

The man smiled.

“Still protective.””

I held Nia’s hand tighter.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at Marcus.

“Didn’t he tell you?””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“This isn’t the place.””

The man laughed softly.

“No. I think this is exactly the place.””

Nia looked confused.

Marcus noticed.

“Nia, go upstairs with your mother.””

She nodded.

But before leaving, she looked back at Marcus.

“You’ll be okay?””

That question broke his expression for a second.

“I will.””

After she went upstairs, Marcus faced his brother.

“Why are you here?””

The man crossed his arms.

“Because Vanessa called me.””

Of course.

My stomach sank.

“She knew you.””

He nodded.

“She contacted me months ago.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

His brother smiled bitterly.

“For the same reason she contacted you.””

“To get what?””

The man looked toward the stairs.

“To get what belongs to our family.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Nothing belongs to you.””

The man’s face hardened.

“Dad changed everything because of you.””

A silence followed.

I looked at Marcus.

“What happened?””

For a moment, Marcus didn’t speak.

Then his brother answered.

“He knows.””

Marcus looked angry.

“Stop.””

“No.””

His brother looked at me.

“You deserve to know why Nia’s trust exists.””

I felt a chill.

“Tell me.””

Marcus looked away.

His brother continued.

“Years ago, our father discovered that I had stolen money from the family business.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

“You nearly destroyed everything,” Marcus said.

His brother ignored him.

“Dad was going to cut me off completely.””

“And he did,” Marcus replied.

The man looked at him.

“Then you convinced him to create the trust.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. Dad created it because he wanted to protect innocent children from adults who made selfish choices.””

The words were aimed directly at him.

His brother looked furious.

“You always thought you were better than me.””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“I thought you needed to take responsibility.””

The man laughed.

“And now you’re raising another person who isn’t even yours.””

My hands tightened.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Leave.””

But his brother didn’t move.

Instead, he pulled out a document.

“This is why Vanessa contacted me.””

Marcus took it.

His face changed.

“What is this?””

“A challenge to the trust.””

Rachel’s warning suddenly made sense.

They weren’t just attacking Nia.

They were attacking from two sides.

Marcus looked at the document.

“This won’t work.””

His brother smiled.

“Maybe.””

Then he looked upstairs.

“But Vanessa found something interesting.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

He looked back at us.

“She found the one thing that could make everyone question Nia’s claim.””

Marcus’s expression became serious.

“What thing?””

The man smiled.

“The truth about who Nia’s biological father really was.””

The room went completely silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

Marcus turned slowly toward me.

I had never seen that expression on his face before.

Not anger.

Not betrayal.

Fear.

Because there was one part of Nia’s story I had never told him.

And now someone else knew.
