Chapter 8: The Box in Vanessa’s Closet

Caleb waited until Vanessa was gone before showing us.

He came through the back door carrying a small wooden box.

His hands were shaking.

“I didn’t steal it,” he said quickly.

Marcus crouched down.

“Caleb, look at me.””

The boy looked up.

“You did the right thing telling us.””

Caleb nodded.

“I just wanted Nia to stop crying.””

Those words hurt.

Because Caleb was a child too.

He had been trapped in Vanessa’s behavior just as much as Nia had.

“What’s inside?”” Marcus asked.

Caleb looked at the box.

“I don’t know.””

He pushed it forward.

“But Mom always hid it.””

Marcus opened the box.

Inside were old papers.

Photographs.

And a small envelope.

I recognized the name immediately.

Nia.

My heart stopped.

Marcus picked up the envelope.

“This is addressed to her.””

The date was from years ago.

Before Vanessa moved in.

Before Marcus and I even met.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter from Nia’s biological grandfather.

I watched Marcus read.

His face slowly changed.

“What does it say?””

He handed it to me.

The letter explained the trust.

But there was something else.

A condition I had never known.

Nia wasn’t just protected financially.

She had been named as the primary beneficiary.

Not because of money.

Because her grandfather wanted to ensure she was cared for after everything she had gone through.

I looked at Marcus.

“She knew.””

He nodded.

“Vanessa knew exactly what she was doing.””

But then Marcus found another document.

His expression changed again.

“What?””

He turned the page toward Rachel.

She read it.

Then immediately became serious.

“This is worse.””

“What is it?”” I asked.

Rachel pointed at the signature.

“She was trying to become Nia’s legal guardian.””

The room froze.

“She wanted custody?””

Rachel nodded.

“Not because she cared about her.””

Marcus clenched his fist.

“She wanted access to the trust.””

Caleb looked horrified.

“So Mom only wanted Nia because of money?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was cruel.

Marcus put the papers down.

“Caleb, I need to ask you something.””

The boy nodded.

“Did your mother ever talk about Nia leaving?””

Caleb looked uncomfortable.

Then slowly nodded.

“She said things would be easier.””

My chest tightened.

“What things?””

Caleb looked at the floor.

“She said our family would be better if there wasn’t so much responsibility.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

He was trying to control his emotions.

Then Caleb said something else.

Something that made all of us look up.

“She also said she had someone who would help her.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Caleb shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

That night, Marcus barely slept.

Neither did I.

Because we knew Vanessa wasn’t acting alone.

The next morning, we received a letter.

Not from a lawyer.

From Vanessa herself.

It was short.

Only one page.

Marcus read it silently.

Then he handed it to me.

The message said:

“You think you’ve uncovered everything. You haven’t.””

Below that was a name.

A name I had never seen before.

A name Marcus recognized immediately.

His face turned pale.

“Who is this?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“It’s my brother.””

I froze.

“Your brother?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“The brother I haven’t spoken to in twelve years.””

“Why?””

His voice became quiet.

“Because he was the reason my father changed the trust.””

I stared at the letter.

Vanessa wasn’t just trying to steal from Nia.

May you like

She had reopened a family war that had been buried for years.

And now someone from Marcus’s past was coming back.
