Chapter 4: The Truth I Buried
Vanessa’s words followed me all day.
Not because I believed her.
Because I knew exactly what she was trying to do.
She wanted to create doubt.
She wanted Marcus to question me.
And the worst part was, she knew there was something I had never told him.
Something I had promised myself I would explain when the time was right.
But after everything that happened with Nia, I realized I had been waiting too long.
That evening, Marcus sat across from me at the kitchen table.
The house was unusually quiet.
Nia was upstairs drawing.
Caleb was in his room.
And for the first time in months, Vanessa wasn’t controlling the atmosphere around us.
Marcus rested his hands on the table.
“What did Vanessa mean?””
I looked down.
I knew this moment would come.
I just never imagined it would happen like this.
“Marcus…”
He shook his head gently.
“Please don’t protect me from the truth.””
Those words hurt.
Because that was exactly what I had been doing.
Protecting him.
Protecting Nia.
Protecting myself.
I took a deep breath.
“When Nia was born, her biological father left.””
Marcus stayed silent.
“I didn’t tell you everything because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
I swallowed.
“That you would see her differently.””
His eyebrows pulled together.
“Why would I ever do that?””
“Because people do.””
I looked toward the staircase.
“When Nia was a baby, her father’s family wanted custody. They said I couldn’t provide the life she deserved.””
Marcus’s expression softened.
“But you fought them.””
“Yes.””
I remembered the cold courtroom.
The questions.
The judgment.
The feeling of having to prove I was enough for my own child.
“I won,” I whispered.
Marcus reached across the table.
“Then what didn’t you tell me?””
I hesitated.
Because the next part was the part I hated.
“The reason they wanted custody wasn’t only about money.””
Marcus waited.
“They found out Nia had a medical condition when she was born.””
His face changed.
“What kind of condition?””
“She had feeding problems as an infant. She struggled to gain weight.””
Marcus looked confused.
“And?””
“And people started treating her like she was fragile.””
I wiped my eyes.
“Her father’s family said she would always need extra care. They acted like she was a burden.””
Marcus stared at me.
“Is that why you thought I would leave?””
I nodded.
“I had already spent years hearing people imply my daughter was difficult.””
My voice cracked.
“I couldn’t lose another person because of her.””
Marcus stood up immediately.
“Nia is not the reason anyone leaves.””
I looked at him.
“She was a baby.””
“I know.””
“She didn’t choose any of it.””
“I know.””
His voice became emotional.
“And I wish you had trusted me enough to tell me.””
That hurt because he was right.
But before I could answer, we heard footsteps.
Nia stood at the bottom of the stairs.
Her eyes were wide.
“How long have you known?””
My heart stopped.
“Nia…”
She looked at Marcus.
“Does Dad know I’m not his real daughter?””
Marcus immediately walked toward her.
“Nia, listen to me.””
But she stepped back.
“I heard Vanessa.””
That name alone changed the air.
Marcus crouched down.
“Come here.””
After a moment, Nia slowly moved closer.
Marcus held her hands.
“You are my daughter because I chose you every single day.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But I’m not your real daughter.””
He shook his head.
“That’s not how families work.””
“Then why did Vanessa say it?””
Marcus looked toward me.
Then back at Nia.
“Because Vanessa was wrong.””
Nia looked down.
“Is that why she doesn’t like me?””
Neither of us answered immediately.
Because children always understand more than adults think.
I knelt beside Marcus.
“Sweetheart, some people don’t know how to love properly.””
Nia whispered.
“Did I do something wrong?””
That question broke something inside me.
“No.””
Marcus answered instantly.
“No, Nia. Never.””
For the first time in months, I saw my daughter believe someone.
That night, after Nia fell asleep, Marcus and I sat in the living room.
The house was peaceful.
But we both knew Vanessa’s final words were not random.
“She knew,” Marcus said.
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She knew about Nia’s past.””
I nodded slowly.
“She must have found old documents.””
Marcus looked toward the window.
“But why use it now?””
Neither of us had an answer.
Until Marcus’s phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
“Is this Marcus?””
“Yes.””
There was a pause.
Then the woman spoke.
“I think you need to know what Vanessa has been planning.””
Marcus sat up.
“Who is this?””
The woman answered.
“My name is Rachel. I used to work with Vanessa.””
And then she said something that made my blood run cold.
May you like
“Your stepmother didn’t just mistreat Nia.””
“She was trying to get something from your family.””
