Chapter 6: The Paper That Changed Everything
Marcus took the folder from Vanessa’s hand.
He didn’t open it immediately.
Maybe because some part of him already knew.
Maybe because he was tired of discovering new ways someone had hurt our daughter.
“What is this?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That your wife has been lying to you.””
I stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You hid important information about Nia.””
“I protected my child.””
“You manipulated him.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I was afraid.””
Vanessa laughed.
“There it is. The truth.””
Marcus opened the folder.
His eyes moved across the papers.
Then he looked confused.
“What am I supposed to be seeing?””
Vanessa moved closer.
“Read the medical section.””
He did.
His expression changed.
I knew exactly what he was reading.
The same records from years ago.
The same information that had haunted me.
“Nia had feeding difficulties as a baby,” Vanessa said.
Marcus looked at her.
“I know.””
Vanessa froze.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
The confidence disappeared from her face.
Marcus closed the folder.
“My wife told me last night.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked surprised.
“That’s impossible.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“What’s impossible is you thinking this would make me love my daughter less.””
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
“No, you don’t.””
She pointed at the papers.
“She will always need extra care.””
Marcus looked at Nia.
Then back at Vanessa.
“So?””
Vanessa blinked.
“So?””
“Yes.””
His voice became firm.
“So I take care of her.””
The room went silent.
Nia looked up.
Marcus walked toward her.
“You know what makes someone a parent?””
She shook her head.
“Showing up.””
He hugged her.
“Not biology. Not paperwork. Not someone else’s opinion.””
I watched my daughter finally relax.
But Vanessa wasn’t finished.
She looked at me.
“You think this changes everything?””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
She smiled.
A small, confident smile.
“The documents I have aren’t the only ones.””
Marcus turned.
“What else?””
Vanessa picked up her purse.
“You’ll find out.””
Then she walked toward the door.
Marcus followed.
“You’re leaving.””
“Yes.””
“You’re not coming back.””
Vanessa stopped.
Then she looked over her shoulder.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I’m correcting one.””
After she left, the house felt different.
Lighter.
But I knew something was still unfinished.
That night, Marcus searched through old family records.
Not because he doubted me.
Because he wanted to understand everything.
Around midnight, he found an envelope.
It was hidden inside a box of old documents.
His name was written on the front.
But I had never seen it before.
“Who is this from?”” I asked.
Marcus opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
His face changed as he read.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“It’s from Vanessa.””
My stomach dropped.
“But it’s dated before she moved in.””
Marcus continued reading.
Then he whispered:
“She didn’t come here to help us.””
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Marcus looked up.
And the fear in his eyes was something I had never seen before.
“It says Vanessa knew about Nia before she ever met us.””
He turned the page.
“And she didn’t move in because she wanted to help.””
A long silence filled the room.
“She moved in because of something she believed belonged to Nia.””
I stared at him.
“What could Nia possibly have?””
Marcus looked back at the letter.
Then he read the final line.
May you like
And my heart stopped.
“Your daughter is the only person standing between me and what I deserve.””
