Chapter 7: The Secret She Wanted
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
“Your daughter is the only person standing between me and what I deserve.””
The words felt heavier every time.
Nia was asleep upstairs.
She had finally fallen asleep after Marcus sat beside her bed for almost an hour, promising her that nobody would take her food, her room, or her family away.
But downstairs, we were discovering that someone had been planning exactly that.
I looked at Marcus.
“What does she think belongs to Nia?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes stayed on the letter.
“I don’t know.””
The uncertainty scared me more than anger would have.
Marcus was the kind of person who always had an answer.
But now he looked lost.
The letter was old.
The handwriting was Vanessa’s.
And it had been written before she ever stepped into our home.
That meant every smile.
Every gift.
Every kind word toward Nia.
It might have been an act.
The next morning, Marcus called Rachel again.
She arrived at our house within an hour.
When she saw the letter, her face changed.
“You found this?””
Marcus nodded.
Rachel carefully picked it up.
“I wondered if she kept a copy.””
“You knew about this?”” Marcus asked.
Rachel hesitated.
“I knew Vanessa was looking for something.””
“What?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Years ago, before she moved here, Vanessa worked with an attorney.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Why?””
“To research family assets.””
Marcus frowned.
“She was investigating us?””
Rachel nodded.
“She knew your father left behind a trust.””
The room became silent.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“My father’s trust?””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus sat down.
“My father created a small inheritance account for his grandchildren.””
Rachel continued.
“But there was a condition.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What condition?””
Rachel took a breath.
“The money was protected for his biological grandchildren until they turned eighteen.””
My stomach tightened.
“Your father’s grandchildren…”
Marcus slowly understood.
“Nia.””
Rachel nodded.
“When Vanessa discovered that, she became obsessed.””
I felt sick.
“So this was never about food.””
“No,” Rachel said.
“It was about making Nia seem like a problem.””
Marcus stood up.
“She tried to convince us Nia was difficult.””
“She needed you to question your wife.””
“She tried to separate our family.””
Rachel nodded.
“Because if Nia was removed from the picture, the trust would become easier to challenge.””
I looked toward the staircase.
My daughter.
The little girl who hid crackers under her bed.
The little girl who apologized for being hungry.
All because someone wanted her gone.
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“How could someone do that to a child?””
Rachel looked down.
“Vanessa has always believed she deserves what other people have.””
That afternoon, Marcus sat with Nia on the porch.
I watched them through the window.
He held a bowl of strawberries.
Nia looked uncertain.
“You can have more if you want,” he said.
She looked at him.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
“What if Ava wants them?””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“Then we buy more.””
Nia looked down.
“Vanessa said there isn’t always enough.””
Marcus’s expression broke.
“There is enough love here for everyone.””
Nia was quiet.
Then she asked the question that destroyed me.
“Dad, if I wasn’t your real daughter… would you still keep me?””
Marcus didn’t hesitate.
“Forever.””
She finally smiled.
A real smile.
The first one I had seen in weeks.
But that peace didn’t last.
That evening, a lawyer arrived at our door.
He introduced himself as Daniel Foster.
Marcus immediately became cautious.
“Can I help you?””
The man held a folder.
“I represent Vanessa.””
My stomach dropped.
Marcus stepped in front of me.
“What does she want?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“She has filed a claim regarding the family trust.””
“On what grounds?””
The lawyer looked at the papers.
“She is questioning Nia’s eligibility.””
My hands went cold.
Marcus’s voice became sharp.
“She has no right.””
Daniel nodded.
“I understand your frustration.””
“No, you don’t.””
The lawyer remained calm.
“I’m only here to inform you that Vanessa believes there are questions about Nia’s legal status.””
I stepped forward.
“What questions?””
Daniel looked at me.
“The same ones she mentioned before.””
My heart sank.
“She’s using my daughter’s birth against her.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
After he left, Marcus stood silently at the door.
Then his phone rang.
It was Caleb.
Marcus answered.
“Hey, buddy.””
Caleb’s voice sounded scared.
“Dad…”
Marcus immediately changed.
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then Caleb whispered:
“I found something in Mom’s room.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“What?””
May you like
Caleb swallowed.
“Something about Nia.””
