Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Vanessa

Rachel agreed to meet us the next morning.

She chose a small coffee shop across town.

Not because she liked the place.

Because she didn’t want Vanessa seeing her.

That alone told me how serious this was.

When Rachel arrived, she looked nervous.

She kept checking the door.

Marcus noticed.

“You’re afraid of her.””

Rachel looked down.

“I know what she’s capable of.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What do you mean?””

Rachel wrapped both hands around her coffee cup.

“I worked with Vanessa for four years.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“And?””

Rachel took a breath.

“She has always been obsessed with control.””

“That doesn’t explain what happened to Nia.””

“No,” Rachel said.

Then she looked directly at me.

“But this does.””

She pulled out her phone.

After a few seconds, she placed it on the table.

There was a picture.

A document.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Vanessa.

Marcus looked at it.

“What is this?””

Rachel answered quietly.

“An agreement.””

My eyes scanned the page.

It was about guardianship.

About financial responsibility.

About children.

My hands went cold.

“What am I looking at?””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“Vanessa found out about Nia’s old custody records.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“She used that information?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Because she believed Nia’s situation could be used to prove your wife was hiding things from you.””

I felt sick.

“She wanted to break our family apart.””

Rachel nodded.

“But that wasn’t the only reason.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What else?””

Rachel hesitated.

“She was trying to convince you that Nia needed a different arrangement.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What arrangement?””

Rachel looked down.

“She wanted Ava to become the center of the family.””

The words sounded ridiculous.

But then I remembered every dinner.

Every missing piece of food.

Every time Nia was told to wait.

“She wanted my daughter pushed aside.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus leaned back.

He looked devastated.

“How long?””

Rachel sighed.

“Months.””

The anger on Marcus’s face was different now.

Not explosive.

Cold.

Controlled.

“What else did she do?””

Rachel looked at me.

“There’s something you need to know.””

I already felt afraid.

“She recorded conversations.””

My heart dropped.

“Why?””

“To create a story.””

Marcus frowned.

“What story?””

“That you were unstable. That your wife was hiding things. That Nia had behavioral problems.””

I stared at her.

“She was building a case.””

“Yes.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus quietly said:

“She wanted to take my children.””

Rachel didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The silence confirmed it.

When we left the coffee shop, Marcus barely spoke.

He drove home with both hands gripping the steering wheel.

Halfway there, he finally said:

“I invited her into our home.””

I looked at him.

“You were trying to help family.””

“I ignored signs.””

I reached over.

“You didn’t know.””

“But you did.””

That sentence hurt.

Because he wasn’t accusing me.

He was grieving.

“I should have protected Nia sooner.””

When we arrived home, something felt wrong.

The front door was unlocked.

Marcus immediately stopped.

“Nobody should be home.””

We stepped inside.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Then we heard a sound upstairs.

A drawer opening.

Marcus ran.

“Nia!””

We reached her room.

And froze.

Vanessa was standing beside Nia’s bed.

Holding the backpack.

The same backpack where Nia hid her food.

Nia stood in the corner, crying.

Marcus’s voice became dangerously calm.

“What are you doing?””

Vanessa slowly turned around.

For once, she didn’t pretend.

She looked angry.

“I’m fixing your mistake.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Put the bag down.””

Vanessa smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

She lifted the backpack.

“She’s been manipulating you.””

Nia shook her head.

“No…”

Vanessa ignored her.

“She wants attention.””

Marcus looked at Nia.

Then at Vanessa.

“Leave.””

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“You’re choosing her?””

Marcus didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Then Vanessa reached into her purse.

And pulled out a folder.

“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to show you this.””

Marcus stared at the folder.

“What is that?””

Vanessa opened it.

May you like

And the first page made my heart stop.

Because it had Nia’s name on it.
