Chapter 11: The Recording That Exposed Her

The date stayed on the screen.

2008.

The year Nia was born.

The year Marcus’s father passed away.

The year everything changed.

I looked at Marcus.

“What does his death have to do with Nia?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

And that scared him.

The next morning, we met with the lawyer Marcus hired.

Her name was Olivia.

She listened carefully while Marcus explained everything.

When he finished, she looked at the USB drive.

“Have you watched anything else?””

“No.””

“Good.””

She examined it.

“Don’t send this to anyone yet.””

“Why?””

“Because if Vanessa created this, she may be trying to control the timing.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“She’s already controlling too much.””

Olivia nodded.

“Then we take that control away.””

She opened the video file again.

This time, we watched frame by frame.

Vanessa appeared.

Calm.

Confident.

Like someone who believed she had already won.

“I know you think I’m the villain,” she said in the recording.

Marcus scoffed.

But Olivia raised a hand.

“Keep watching.””

Vanessa continued.

“I tried to solve this peacefully.””

I almost laughed.

Peacefully.

After taking food from a child’s plate.

After making Nia hide snacks.

After trying to remove her from her own family.

Then Vanessa said something that made all of us freeze.

“Your father knew about Ethan Walker.””

Marcus sat up.

“What?””

The video continued.

“He knew Ethan had a daughter.””

My hands went cold.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Why?””

“Because Ethan disappeared before anyone knew.””

But Vanessa was still speaking.

“And your father knew that child would inherit everything.””

Olivia paused the video.

“Interesting.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“She’s not saying Nia’s father was unknown.””

Olivia pointed at the screen.

“She’s saying your father knew.””

Marcus stood.

“My father never met Nia.””

Olivia looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

The question made him stop.

Because suddenly, he wasn’t.

Later that afternoon, Marcus went through his father’s old belongings.

Boxes that had been untouched for years.

Old letters.

Business records.

Photographs.

Then he found it.

A small notebook.

Inside was his father’s handwriting.

Marcus read silently.

Then he handed it to me.

There was one sentence underlined.

“Protect the child. She is innocent in this.””

My heart stopped.

The child.

Not a child.

The child.

Nia.

Marcus sat down.

“My father knew.””

I touched the page.

“But why?””

He turned more pages.

There were notes about Ethan.

About the Walker family.

About the trust.

Then one sentence appeared.

“Vanessa cannot be trusted with this information.””

We all went silent.

Olivia looked up.

“Your father knew Vanessa was involved?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“But he died before he could tell us.””

Everything suddenly made sense.

Vanessa hadn’t discovered this recently.

She had been searching for something that existed before we even knew she was dangerous.

That evening, Marcus called Caleb.

He needed to know if Vanessa had taken anything else.

Caleb answered quietly.

“Dad?””

“Buddy, did your mom ever talk about Grandpa?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Caleb hesitated.

“She said Grandpa made a mistake.””

Marcus frowned.

“What mistake?””

“She said he protected the wrong person.””

The words sent a chill through me.

Then Caleb added:

“She kept an old picture of him.””

“What picture?””

“I don’t know.””

“Where was it?””

“In her room.””

Marcus looked at me.

Then at Olivia.

We all knew what that meant.

There was still something hidden in Vanessa’s old room.

Something she believed nobody would ever find.

That night, Marcus returned home after checking the house.

He was holding a photograph.

He didn’t speak.

He just placed it on the table.

I looked down.

And my entire body went cold.

Because in the picture was a young Vanessa.

Standing beside Ethan.

May you like

And holding a baby.

A baby with the same birthmark Nia had.
