Chapter 12: The Child Everyone Wanted
Nobody spoke.
The photograph sat between us.
A piece of paper.
A moment frozen in time.
And a truth none of us were prepared to accept.
Marcus looked at me.
“Tell me you knew.””
I shook my head immediately.
“I didn’t.””
His expression softened.
“I believe you.””
That mattered.
More than I could explain.
Because after everything, I needed to know he still believed me.
Olivia picked up the photograph carefully.
“Who took this?””
Marcus looked at the back.
There was writing.
A date.
And a location.
The same year Nia was born.
“The hospital,” he whispered.
My stomach turned.
Vanessa had been there.
Not recently.
Not by accident.
From the beginning.
“She knew about Nia before she moved in,” Marcus said.
Olivia nodded.
“And she likely knew about the trust before anyone else.””
I stared at the picture.
“But why was she holding a baby?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
It was Caleb.
He sounded terrified.
“Dad?””
“What happened?””
“I found something else.””
Marcus stood.
“Where are you?””
“In Mom’s old room.””
My heart jumped.
“Caleb, leave the room.””
“I found a box.””
“Caleb.””
“There are papers inside.””
Marcus looked at Olivia.
“Don’t touch anything.””
But Caleb was already speaking.
“Dad…”
His voice changed.
“There’s a birth certificate.””
The room went silent.
Marcus gripped the phone.
“Whose?””
A long pause.
Then Caleb whispered:
“Nia’s.””
I felt the air disappear.
“That’s impossible,” I said.
Marcus looked at me.
“Caleb, read the name.””
The boy was quiet.
Then:
“It says the mother is…”
His voice shook.
“Vanessa.””
The phone nearly slipped from Marcus’s hand.
“No.””
Caleb continued.
“And the father…”
Another pause.
“I think it says Ethan Walker.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
I felt like my entire world had cracked open.
Because the woman who had taken food from my daughter’s plate…
The woman who had called her a burden…
Might have been connected to her in a way none of us imagined.
Marcus looked at me.
I saw the confusion in his eyes.
The fear.
The impossible question.
Olivia immediately spoke.
“We need to verify that document.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Because papers could be fake.
People could lie.
Vanessa had proven that.
But if the document was real…
Everything changed.
We drove to the house.
Caleb was standing outside, holding the box.
His face was pale.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
Marcus hugged him.
“You did the right thing.””
Then we opened the box.
Inside were documents.
Letters.
Photographs.
And one final envelope.
The name written on it made my hands shake.
“Nia.””
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Vanessa.
From Ethan.
The first line was enough to make Marcus stop reading.
“Dear Nia, if you ever find this, know that I was not allowed to tell you the truth.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Not allowed?””
He kept reading.
Then his face changed.
Because the letter revealed something neither Vanessa nor anyone else had mentioned.
Ethan had not abandoned Nia.
He had been forced away.
May you like
And the person who forced him away…
was the one person we never suspected.
