Chapter 10: The Debt She Hid

The words stayed in the room long after Vanessa said them.

“He found out.””

My dad stared at her.

“Who found out?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That silence was louder than anything she could have said.

My dad stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked toward the front door.

For a moment, I thought she might run.

Then she sat down.

Her shoulders dropped.

“I made a mistake.””

I almost laughed.

A mistake.

That was the word people used when they didn’t want to admit what they had done.

“You keep saying that,” I said.

“But mistakes don’t usually require secret accounts and fake agreements.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I know.””

It was the first time she didn’t fight back.

That scared me more.

My dad pulled out a chair.

“Start from the beginning.””

Vanessa looked at the table.

“I had financial problems.””

“What kind?””

She swallowed.

“Before I married you, I had debt.””

My dad’s face changed.

“You never told me that.””

“I was embarrassed.””

“So you hid it?””

She nodded.

“I thought I could fix it.””

I crossed my arms.

“And when you couldn’t?””

She looked at me.

“I borrowed more.””

The room became silent.

My dad looked hurt.

“How much?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

“Enough that I started using household money.””

My stomach tightened.

“So when you took my savings…”

“I thought I could replace it.””

My anger rose.

“You thought?””

She looked at me.

“I was going to.””

“No,” I said.

“You were hoping.””

She didn’t respond.

Because she knew I was right.

My dad stood up and walked away from the table.

I could tell he was trying not to explode.

“You let me believe everything was fine.””

“I was trying to protect this family.””

“No,” he said.

“You were protecting yourself.””

That sentence hit her.

She looked down.

For the first time, she seemed to understand what she had damaged.

Not just money.

Trust.

A few hours later, my dad found more information.

There were payments we never knew about.

Subscriptions.

Transfers.

Loans.

Things Vanessa had hidden.

But one name appeared again and again.

A private lender.

Someone named Gregory.

My dad stared at the records.

“Who is Gregory?””

Vanessa went completely still.

“I can handle it.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

She didn’t answer.

My dad turned toward her.

“Who is Gregory?””

Finally, she whispered:

“He helped me when I needed money.””

I looked at her.

“And now he wants it back.””

She nodded.

That explained the message.

The fear.

Everything.

But it still didn’t explain why she took my money.

My dad asked the question I had been waiting for.

“Why Emily’s account?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And her answer made my chest tighten.

“Because I knew she had saved a lot.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“You were watching my savings?””

She looked ashamed.

“I knew you were working.””

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“You knew I was working because you were waiting.””

She didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than an argument.

Because silence was confirmation.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

I kept thinking about the summer.

Every early morning.

Every exhausting shift.

Every time I said no when my coworkers invited me out because I wanted to save.

All of it.

Gone.

Not because of an emergency.

Not because someone had no choice.

Because someone decided my hard work was available.

The next morning, my dad made a decision.

“Emily, pack a bag.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“We’re staying somewhere else for a few days.””

I didn’t expect that.

“What about Vanessa?””

He looked toward the hallway.

“I need space to figure out what happens next.””

Before I could answer, Vanessa appeared.

She looked nervous.

“Michael.””

He turned.

“I’m sorry.””

My dad didn’t respond.

She looked at me.

“I know you hate me right now.””

I said nothing.

“But I never wanted to hurt you.””

I stared at her.

“Then why did you?””

She opened her mouth.

No answer came.

Then there was a knock at the door.

Everyone froze.

Vanessa’s face went pale.

My dad looked at her.

“Is that Gregory?””

She didn’t move.

The knocking came again.

Harder.

May you like

And then a man’s voice came from the other side.

“Vanessa, I know you’re home.””
