Chapter 7: The Agreement I Never Signed

The folder sat between my dad and me like something dangerous.

I stared at my name printed across the front.

“Financial Responsibility Agreement.””

The title alone made my stomach twist.

I had never seen that document before.

I had never agreed to anything.

And yet Vanessa had somehow created something with my name attached to it.

My dad opened the folder slowly.

Inside were several pages.

He scanned the first one.

Then the second.

His face changed.

“Emily…”

I leaned closer.

“What?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“This says you agreed to contribute your income toward household expenses.””

I felt my heart drop.

“I never signed that.””

My dad looked at me.

“You’re sure?””

I stared at him.

“Dad, I’m seventeen. Why would I sign something giving away every dollar I earn?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he knew the answer.

I wouldn’t.

I looked through the pages.

There were sections about responsibilities, shared expenses, and financial contributions.

But something felt wrong.

The wording didn’t sound like me.

It sounded like an adult had written it.

Someone trying to make taking my money sound acceptable.

“She planned this,” I whispered.

My dad rubbed his forehead.

“Emily…”

“No. Think about it.””

I pointed at the papers.

“She changed the account password. She moved the money. She bought the laptop. Then she tried to create a document making it look like I agreed.””

My dad became quiet.

For once, he wasn’t defending her.

He was thinking.

The next morning, we took the documents to someone my dad trusted.

A family friend named Daniel who worked with legal paperwork.

We sat in his office while he reviewed the pages.

After several minutes, he looked up.

“Who prepared this?””

My dad hesitated.

“My wife.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Did you sign this?””

“No.””

“Did you agree verbally?””

“No.””

He nodded.

“Then this document does not represent your agreement.””

My dad exhaled.

I felt a small sense of relief.

But Daniel wasn’t finished.

“There’s something else.””

“What?”” my dad asked.

Daniel tapped the pages.

“This document has your daughter’s information, but there are inconsistencies.””

“What kind?””

“The dates.””

I leaned forward.

“What about them?””

He pointed.

“The agreement claims it was created before the summer job began.””

My face went cold.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because I didn’t even have the job yet.””

Daniel nodded.

“That means someone prepared this before your earnings existed.””

The room went silent.

My dad looked at the papers again.

Then he whispered:

“She planned to take it from the beginning.””

That sentence hurt.

Because it confirmed what I had been afraid to believe.

This wasn’t a misunderstanding.

It wasn’t a mistake.

It was intentional.

When we got home, Vanessa was waiting.

She was standing in the kitchen.

She looked at my dad.

Then at me.

“You went through my things?””

My dad held up the folder.

“Why did you create this?””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“You opened it?””

“You told me Emily agreed to this.””

“She did.””

“No, she didn’t.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Michael, don’t let her manipulate you.””

I stepped forward.

“You used my name on a document I never signed.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You don’t understand adult responsibilities.””

“I understand someone taking my money.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea how much this family sacrifices for you.””

My dad shook his head.

“Vanessa, stop.””

That was the first time he had said those words.

And she noticed.

“What did you just say?””

“I said stop.””

The kitchen became silent.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re choosing her?””

My dad looked at me.

Then back at Vanessa.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

She stepped away to answer it.

I couldn’t hear everything.

Only a few words.

“Yes, I know.””

“No, she found out.””

“She wasn’t supposed to see that.””

My dad and I looked at each other.

Because we both heard the same thing.

She wasn’t talking about a mistake.

She was talking about a plan.

May you like

And then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.

“We need to move before she tells him everything.””
