Chapter 11: The Man At The Door
Nobody moved.
The voice outside was calm.
Too calm.
That made it worse.
My dad looked at Vanessa.
“Who is he?””
She didn’t answer.
The knocking came again.
“Vanessa.””
Her hands started shaking.
I had never seen her look afraid before.
Not when I confronted her.
Not when Dad questioned her.
Not even when we found the documents.
But now?
She looked terrified.
My dad walked toward the door.
Vanessa immediately grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.””
He looked at her hand.
Then at her face.
“Why?””
She let go slowly.
“He’s not someone you want involved.””
My dad’s expression hardened.
“You already involved him.””
He opened the door.
A man stood outside.
Late forties.
Expensive jacket.
Cold expression.
He looked past my dad and immediately found Vanessa.
“There you are.””
My dad stepped forward.
“Can I help you?””
The man looked at him.
“You must be Michael.””
The way he said my dad’s name made my stomach drop.
“How do you know me?””
The man smiled slightly.
“Because Vanessa talks.””
Vanessa looked embarrassed.
My dad’s voice became colder.
“What do you want?””
The man ignored him.
He looked around the house.
Then his eyes landed on me.
“Is that Emily?””
I froze.
My dad noticed.
“How do you know my daughter?””
The man looked amused.
“Because Vanessa told me everything.””
My heart started beating faster.
Everything?
What did that mean?
My dad stepped outside.
“You need to leave.””
The man didn’t move.
“Your wife owes money.””
My dad’s face changed.
“How much?””
The man named an amount.
I didn’t know the exact number.
But judging by my dad’s expression, it was more than we expected.
Vanessa came closer.
“Please.””
The man looked at her.
“I gave you time.””
My dad turned.
“You borrowed money from him?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.””
“And you used Emily’s savings to pay him?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
The man looked at me.
“Your stepmother said you were the reason everything would work out.””
I felt sick.
“What?””
“She said you had savings.””
My dad looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
I understood.
She hadn’t just taken my money.
She had promised it.
My dad stepped between us.
“You leave now.””
The man smiled.
“This isn’t over.””
“Yes, it is.””
The man looked at him.
“You think you understand what’s happening?””
My dad didn’t respond.
The man reached into his pocket and pulled out a folder.
He handed it to my dad.
“Ask your wife what else she signed.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What is that?””
The man smiled.
“You know.””
Then he walked away.
My dad closed the door.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, he opened the folder.
The first page was enough to make him stop.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He just stared.
Then he turned the page toward me.
My name was there.
Again.
But this time, it wasn’t a financial responsibility agreement.
It was something else.
Something I had never seen.
Something Vanessa had signed without telling me.
My dad whispered:
May you like
“She put you down as collateral.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
