Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Plan

I read the message five times.

Every time, it felt worse.

“You think this is about money, Emily. It never was.””

I didn’t know what Vanessa meant.

But I knew one thing.

She wanted me scared.

I took the paper downstairs immediately.

My dad was sitting at the table.

The second he saw my face, he stood up.

“What happened?””

I handed him the note.

He read it silently.

Then his expression hardened.

“Where did you get this?””

“It was outside my room.””

His jaw tightened.

“She put this there?””

“I don’t know.””

But we both knew.

The house suddenly felt different.

Not like home.

Like a place where I had to be careful.

My dad called Vanessa into the living room.

She came down slowly.

“What?””

He held up the paper.

“Did you write this?””

She looked at it.

Then looked away.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

My dad noticed.

“Then why are you nervous?””

“I’m not.””

I stepped forward.

“Someone left this outside my room.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You’re accusing me again?””

“I’m asking a question.””

She laughed.

“You’ve become obsessed.””

“No,” I said.

“I became careful.””

That made her expression change.

Because she knew exactly what I meant.

My dad placed the paper on the table.

“I want the truth.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You really want to do this?””

“Yes.””

She looked between us.

Then she sighed.

“You don’t understand the pressure I’ve been under.””

My dad shook his head.

“That’s not an answer.””

She sat down.

For the first time, she looked tired.

Not guilty.

Just tired.

“I made mistakes.””

I waited.

There it was.

The first admission.

My dad leaned forward.

“What mistakes?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I thought Emily was becoming selfish.””

I felt my anger rise.

“Because I wanted to keep my own paycheck?””

“Because you stopped thinking about the family.””

I shook my head.

“No. I stopped letting people take advantage of me.””

My dad closed his eyes.

“Vanessa.””

She ignored him.

“You don’t know what it’s like managing everything.””

“Then ask for help,” I said.

Her eyes flashed.

“I shouldn’t have to.””

That sentence revealed more than she realized.

She didn’t think she needed permission.

She thought she deserved control.

My dad stood up.

“You need to tell me everything.””

Vanessa looked at him.

Then she said something unexpected.

“There’s another reason.””

The room went silent.

“What reason?”” my dad asked.

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Because Chloe wasn’t the only person who needed that laptop.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I had another payment.””

My dad stared at her.

“What payment?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Finally, she said:

“I owed someone money.””

My heart sank.

“So you took mine?””

“No.””

“Yes,” my dad said firmly.

She looked away.

And that was when I noticed something.

Her story was changing.

First, it was about Chloe.

Then it was about family expenses.

Now there was another person involved.

Someone she owed.

Someone she was hiding.

My dad asked:

“Who did you owe?””

Vanessa remained silent.

Then her phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed instantly.

Fear.

Real fear.

She quickly turned the phone away.

But not before I saw the name.

A name I had never heard before.

My dad noticed too.

“Who is that?””

Vanessa grabbed her phone.

“No one.””

My dad stepped closer.

“Then why do you look terrified?””

She didn’t answer.

A few seconds later, the phone buzzed again.

This time, a message appeared on the screen.

Vanessa read it.

And all the color disappeared from her face.

Because whoever was contacting her didn’t ask for money.

They wrote only four words.

“We need to talk.””

May you like

And Vanessa whispered:

“He found out.””
