Chapter 12: The Choice I Had To Make

I couldn’t breathe.

“Collateral?””

The word sounded impossible.

Like something from a movie.

Not something that could happen inside my own house.

My dad immediately closed the folder.

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“She cannot do that.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying now.

Not angry tears.

Not frustrated tears.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Explain,” my dad said.

She wiped her face.

“I was desperate.””

“That’s not an explanation.””

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You used our daughter’s name.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never meant for it to go this far.””

I stepped back.

“You keep saying that.””

She looked at me.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“But you always knew.””

She started crying harder.

“I was scared.””

“So was I.””

The room went silent.

Because that was the first time I said it.

Not angry.

Not accusing.

Just honest.

“I was scared when my money disappeared.””

I looked at my dad.

“I was scared when nobody believed me.””

Then I looked back at Vanessa.

“And I was scared when I realized you were planning things behind my back.””

My dad walked over and put a hand on my shoulder.

“I’m sorry.””

I nodded.

But this time, the apology didn’t erase everything.

Some damage took time.

The next few days changed everything.

My dad separated all the finances.

He opened a new account for me.

He made sure only I had access.

And for the first time in weeks, I felt like I had control over my own life again.

But Vanessa wasn’t giving up.

She kept trying to explain.

One evening, she found me in the kitchen.

“Emily.””

I looked up.

“I know you don’t believe me.””

I stayed quiet.

“But I want you to know something.””

“What?””

She looked down.

“I was jealous.””

That surprised me.

“Of me?””

She nodded.

“You worked hard. You were independent. People respected you.””

I didn’t know what to say.

“I felt like I was failing.””

“So you punished me?””

She looked ashamed.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She didn’t argue.

Because she knew.

That night, my dad showed me something.

A message from the lender.

Gregory had contacted him.

He wanted repayment.

But there was something else.

A warning.

“He says Vanessa has more information.””

I frowned.

“What information?””

My dad looked worried.

“I don’t know.””

The next morning, Vanessa packed a bag.

I watched from the stairs.

She looked different.

Smaller.

Like someone who finally understood the consequences.

Before she left, she stopped.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t answer.

She nodded.

Then she said:

“There’s something you need to know.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

She looked at my dad.

Then back at me.

“The money I took from you…”

She hesitated.

“It wasn’t all used for the laptop.””

The room went cold.

My dad stepped forward.

“Where did the rest go?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

Then she whispered:

“I gave it to someone else.””

“Who?””

She looked toward the window.

And said a name that made my dad freeze.

Because it was someone we knew.

Someone who had been in our house many times.

May you like

Someone I trusted.

“Your uncle David.””
