Chapter 5: The Evidence She Forgot

The next morning, I woke up earlier than usual.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I couldn’t sleep.

My mind kept replaying everything.

The missing money.

My dad’s silence.

Vanessa’s confidence.

The strange login.

I grabbed my notebook and started writing everything down.

Dates.

Times.

Amounts.

Every conversation I could remember.

For the first time since this started, I stopped feeling powerless.

I wasn’t just angry anymore.

I was focused.

At school, my best friend Hannah noticed something was wrong before I even sat down.

“You look exhausted,” she said.

I dropped my backpack beside my chair.

“I barely slept.””

She lowered her voice.

“What happened?””

I hesitated.

I hated explaining family problems.

It made everything feel more real.

But Hannah had always been the person who listened.

So I told her.

All of it.

When I finished, she stared at me.

“She took your entire summer savings?””

I nodded.

“And your dad allowed it?””

“He didn’t know everything.””

“But he didn’t stop it either.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it was true.

After school, I went straight to the bank.

I sat across from a woman named Rachel who helped customers with account issues.

“I need information about unauthorized transfers,” I said.

She looked concerned.

“Are you the account holder?””

“Yes.””

She checked my ID and pulled up the information.

A few minutes later, her expression changed.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“There were multiple account actions.””

My stomach tightened.

“Meaning?””

“There was a transfer request, but there was also a password change and linked device authorization.””

“Can you tell who did it?””

She looked at the screen.

“Someone with access.””

“Who?””

“I can’t give you private information about another person’s access.””

I felt disappointed.

Then she continued.

“But I can tell you this.””

I looked up.

“The account changes were not accidental.””

My throat went dry.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone intentionally added access permissions.””

I thanked her and left.

Outside the bank, I stood on the sidewalk holding my folder.

I finally understood why Vanessa had been so calm.

She didn’t think she had done something wrong.

She thought she had the right to do it.

When I got home, I found Vanessa sitting at the kitchen table.

Chloe was beside her using the new laptop.

They both looked comfortable.

Like nothing had happened.

I placed my folder on the table.

Vanessa looked at it.

“What is that?””

“Proof.””

Chloe stopped typing.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Proof of what?””

“That you accessed my account.””

Her smile disappeared for half a second.

Then she recovered.

“You’re accusing me?””

“I’m saying the bank confirmed someone changed my account settings.””

My dad walked into the kitchen.

“What’s going on?””

Vanessa immediately looked at him.

“Your daughter is attacking me again.””

I turned toward him.

“No. I’m asking questions.””

My dad looked tired.

“Emily, can we please stop fighting?””

I stared at him.

“You still think this is a fight?””

He didn’t answer.

I pointed at the laptop.

“Ask her where the money went.””

Chloe looked uncomfortable.

Vanessa stood up.

“Enough.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more pretending this is normal.””

The kitchen went silent.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You should be careful.””

“Why?””

“Because when you live in someone else’s house, you don’t get to make demands.””

I looked at my dad.

I waited for him to say something.

Anything.

But he stayed quiet.

That silence hurt more than Vanessa’s words.

Then Chloe suddenly closed her laptop.

“Mom…”

Vanessa turned.

“What?””

Chloe looked nervous.

“I think I accidentally saw something.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“What did you see?””

Chloe swallowed.

“On the laptop setup page.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The account used to register the laptop…”

She stopped.

And then she whispered something that made Vanessa’s face lose all color.

“It had Emily’s name on it.””
