Chapter 6: The Truth Behind the Purchase

The kitchen became completely silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even Vanessa looked shocked.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just shocked.

For the first time since this began, she looked like someone who had been caught off guard.

My dad slowly turned toward her.

“Vanessa?””

She recovered quickly.

“What? That doesn’t mean anything.””

But her voice was different.

Less confident.

More nervous.

Chloe looked between us.

“I thought maybe I read it wrong.””

“You probably did,” Vanessa said quickly.

“No,” Chloe replied.

“I remember because I thought it was weird.””

That was the first time Chloe had ever sounded unsure about her mother.

I watched Vanessa carefully.

She noticed.

And she didn’t like it.

“Chloe, go upstairs.””

“But—”

“Now.””

Chloe grabbed the laptop and walked away.

The second she disappeared, my dad looked at Vanessa.

“Explain.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I already explained.””

“No,” he said.

“You didn’t.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

He was finally asking.

Vanessa looked irritated.

“She needed a laptop.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

The room became tense.

I watched my dad carefully.

For weeks, he had avoided conflict.

Now he couldn’t.

“Why was Emily’s name connected to it?”” he asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

Then back at him.

“It was just a setup mistake.””

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

I stepped forward.

“A mistake that happened after you took my money?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You need to stop acting like a victim.””

I laughed quietly.

“Victim?””

“Yes.””

She pointed toward the stairs.

“Chloe needed something important.””

“So did I.””

“You’re always making everything about yourself.””

Those words hurt.

Not because they were true.

Because they were the same words she had used for years.

Whenever Chloe got something.

Whenever I asked a question.

Whenever I wanted to be considered.

I was always the problem.

My dad looked at me.

“Emily…”

I interrupted him.

“No, Dad. I need you to hear this.””

I opened my phone.

“I worked all summer because I didn’t want to ask anyone for help.””

My voice shook.

“I saved every dollar because I wanted to buy something important for my future.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And she decided my hard work belonged to her.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my dad asked quietly:

“Vanessa, did you use Emily’s account to buy the laptop?””

Vanessa looked away.

That was the answer.

My dad closed his eyes.

A long silence followed.

Finally, he said:

“I need the truth.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You’re taking her side?””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I’m asking a question.””

She stood up.

“I cannot believe this.””

She grabbed her purse.

“After everything I do for this family, I’m the villain?””

Nobody answered.

She walked toward the door.

Then she stopped.

She looked back at me.

“You have no idea what you just started.””

The words sent a chill through me.

Because they weren’t a warning.

They were a promise.

That night, my dad sat across from me at the kitchen table.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

It was the first time he had said it.

But I didn’t know if it was enough.

“I should have listened.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes. You should have.””

He looked down.

“There’s something else.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

He took a deep breath.

“After I came home, Vanessa asked me to sign some documents.””

“What documents?””

He hesitated.

“I thought they were about household finances.””

My stomach dropped.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“She told me you agreed.””

I felt cold.

“Agreed to what?””

He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a folder.

“I haven’t opened it since she gave it to me.””

I stared at the folder.

Then I saw my name written on the front.

Not Vanessa’s.

Not Chloe’s.

Mine.

And underneath my name was a phrase that made my entire body go still.

“Financial Responsibility Agreement.””

My dad looked at me.

“I think we need to find out what she was planning.””

May you like

And for the first time, I realized losing my savings might not have been Vanessa’s real goal.

It might have only been the beginning.
