Chapter 2: The Lie He Heard First
I stood in the hallway holding my phone so tightly my fingers hurt.
My dad looked from Vanessa to me.
“Emily, what is she talking about?””
I opened my mouth.
But Vanessa spoke first.
“She’s angry because I bought Chloe a laptop.””
My dad frowned.
“That’s it?””
“No,” Vanessa said quickly.
“It’s worse than that.””
I felt my stomach sink.
She was building a story.
Piece by piece.
“She accused me of stealing from her,” Vanessa continued.
My dad looked at me.
“Did you say that?””
“Yes,” I answered immediately.
“Because she did.””
The room went quiet.
Vanessa shook her head sadly.
“See? This is exactly what I mean.””
I couldn’t believe it.
She was acting like she was the victim.
“Dad, check my account.””
He looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because she took my savings.””
Vanessa sighed.
“Michael, she’s exaggerating.””
“No, I’m not.””
My voice cracked.
“I worked all summer. I saved $1,840. It’s gone.””
My dad looked at Vanessa.
“Did you move her money?””
Vanessa didn’t answer right away.
That pause told me everything.
Finally, she said, “I transferred it.””
My dad’s eyebrows lowered.
“Why?””
“Because Chloe needed a laptop.””
I waited.
I waited for him to be angry.
I waited for him to say that wasn’t okay.
Instead, he rubbed his forehead.
“Emily…”
The way he said my name hurt.
Like I was the problem.
“She’s your sister.””
“She’s my stepsister.””
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Act like this is some competition.””
I stared at him.
“I’m not competing with Chloe. I’m asking why my money was taken without asking me.””
Vanessa sat down beside him.
“Michael, I tried to explain this to her. She doesn’t understand how families work.””
I almost laughed.
Because I understood exactly how families worked.
Families were supposed to protect you.
Not take from you.
Not make you feel invisible.
My dad looked tired.
“Emily, you live here. We take care of you.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you acting like we betrayed you?””
The question stunned me.
Because he really didn’t understand.
“You did betray me.””
My dad looked away.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“She’s being disrespectful.””
I grabbed my phone and opened the bank statement.
“Look.””
I handed it to him.
He looked at the screen.
Then his expression changed slightly.
For one second, I saw doubt.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Michael, don’t let her manipulate you.””
My dad looked back at me.
“Emily, this isn’t about the money anymore.””
“Yes, it is.””
“No,” he said.
“It’s about how you’re treating this family.””
I felt something inside me break.
Because somehow, I was the one being blamed.
Chloe walked into the room carrying her new laptop.
She smiled.
“Is everything okay?””
Nobody answered.
She looked at me.
Then at my dad.
Then she hugged the laptop.
“Mom said Emily was upset because she thinks I don’t deserve nice things.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
“I never said that.””
Chloe shrugged.
“But that’s what it feels like.””
My dad sighed.
“Enough.””
I couldn’t believe it.
He wasn’t asking questions.
He wasn’t investigating.
He was just trying to make the argument disappear.
That night, I went back to my room and locked the door.
I opened my closet and pulled out the old laptop I was trying to replace.
The screen flickered.
The battery warning appeared.
I stared at it.
Then I started crying.
Not because I didn’t have a laptop.
Because the money represented something bigger.
I worked for it.
I earned it.
And the people who were supposed to support me decided my effort belonged to someone else.
The next morning, I woke up to a message from my bank.
My heart stopped.
I opened it.
There had been another transaction.
A new transfer.
I stared at the amount.
Then I saw the name attached.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Chloe.
It was someone I never expected.
My father.
And underneath the transaction was a note that made my hands start shaking.
It said:
“Adjustment for household expenses.””
But I knew something.
My dad had never touched that account before.
Which meant one terrifying possibility.
May you like
Someone had convinced him to do it.
And I knew exactly who.
