Chapter 9: What Vanessa Did

Nobody moved.

Madison stood in the doorway with tears running down her face.

The girl who had laughed when Vanessa threw a suitcase at my feet now looked terrified of her own mother.

Dad spoke first.

“What did Vanessa tell you?””

Madison shook her head.

“Not everything.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

“She said the folder could ruin us.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is Vanessa?””

“I don’t know.””

Dad immediately pulled out his phone.

Madison looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t answer.

Not yet.

Claire crouched beside the suitcase.

“Has anyone touched this folder?””

Madison shook her head.

“Mom put it there.””

“When?””

“Last night.””

“Why?””

Madison wiped her face.

“She thought Grace would take the suitcase when she left.””

I stared at her.

Then the plan became horrifyingly clear.

Vanessa hadn’t just thrown luggage at me.

She wanted me to carry something out of the house.

Something she needed gone.

Claire seemed to understand at the same moment.

“She was using Grace to remove evidence.””

Dad looked like he had been hit.

“She planned the whole thing.””

Daniel nodded.

“The bedroom was an excuse.””

Claire carefully opened the folder.

Inside were bank records.

Copies of legal documents.

Several handwritten notes.

And a printed email chain.

The first email was from Vanessa.

The recipient was someone named Richard Cole.

The message was short.

*Michael signed. Proceed with the revised version before he notices the beneficiary restriction.*

Dad sank onto my desk chair.

“No.””

Claire read the next email.

*What about Grace?*

Vanessa’s response appeared underneath.

*She’s a minor. By the time she understands any of this, the property will already be consolidated.*

My hands went cold.

There were more.

Years of them.

Plans.

Transfers.

Discussions about Dad.

Discussions about me.

Then Daniel found something else.

“A medical invoice.””

Dad looked up.

“What?””

Daniel handed it to Claire.

The invoice was from a private care facility.

Three years earlier.

My mother’s name appeared at the top.

I stepped closer.

“Why would Vanessa have this?””

Nobody answered.

Claire flipped through the remaining documents.

Then she found a letter.

It was addressed to Vanessa.

From my mother.

Claire read the first sentence silently.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She handed it to me.

I read aloud.

“Vanessa, I know you intercepted my letters to Michael.””

Dad stood.

I continued.

“I also know you accessed funds from the trust using documents Michael did not understand.””

My voice started shaking.

The next paragraph was worse.

“If you continue, I will contact Michael directly and provide everything to Claire.””

Dad whispered, “She knew.””

I kept reading.

“I have no interest in interfering with your marriage. I only want my daughter protected.””

There was one final handwritten sentence.

*You will not erase me from Grace’s life.*

I lowered the page.

The room was silent.

Madison covered her mouth.

“My mom had this?””

“Yes,” I whispered.

Daniel took the letter.

“Look at the date.””

It had been written four days before my mother entered the care facility.

Claire picked up the invoice again.

“This facility wasn’t near where your mother lived.””

Dad frowned.

“Where was it?””

“Two states away.””

My skin prickled.

“Why?””

Claire looked at Daniel.

Then at Dad.

“I don’t know.””

Dad pulled out his phone.

“I’m calling them.””

The facility still existed.

After several transfers, Dad reached an administrator.

He put the call on speaker.

“My name is Michael Carter. I’m trying to obtain information regarding a former patient.””

The administrator asked for details.

Dad provided them.

There was typing.

Then silence.

“Yes,” the woman said.

“We have that name.””

Dad gripped the phone.

“Who admitted her?””

More typing.

“I can’t release all records without proper authorization.””

“Can you tell me who was listed as the emergency contact?””

The woman hesitated.

Claire stepped in.

“This is attorney Claire Bennett. I can send authorization immediately.””

After another long pause, the administrator spoke.

“The listed emergency contact was Vanessa Carter.””

Dad’s face went blank.

Madison whispered, “Mom?””

My knees almost gave out.

Vanessa had known where my mother was.

She had known my mother was sick.

And she had never told us.

Dad’s voice trembled.

“Was there another contact?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

The administrator read the name.

“Michael Carter.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“I never received a call.””

“I can only tell you what the record says.””

“What does it say?””

Another pause.

“Several calls were made.””

Dad opened his eyes.

“To what number?””

The administrator read it.

It wasn’t Dad’s number.

Daniel recognized it first.

“That was Vanessa’s old cell.””

The room went completely silent.

Dad sat down.

“She redirected the calls.””

Claire’s expression hardened.

“We need the complete records.””

Madison started crying harder.

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at her.

For the first time, I believed her.

Then the front door slammed downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Footsteps crossed the foyer.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Vanessa called from below.

“Madison?””

Dad stood.

His face changed.

The exhausted man who had spent days apologizing disappeared.

He picked up my mother’s letter.

Then walked toward the stairs.

Vanessa appeared at the bottom.

She looked up and saw all of us.

Then she saw the blue folder in Claire’s hands.

Her face went white.

Dad descended one step.

Then another.

“You knew where she was.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“You knew Grace’s mother was trying to reach me.””

“Michael, listen—”

“You intercepted the calls.””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“You took her letters.””

Vanessa backed away.

Dad reached the bottom step.

Then he held up the document.

“And you used my daughter to carry evidence out of this house.””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward me.

For the first time, she looked afraid of me.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“You don’t understand what your mother was going to do,” she said.

I stepped forward.

“What was she going to do?””

Vanessa stared at me.

Then at the blue folder.

Her lips trembled.

“She was going to expose everything.””

“Everything about what?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Claire pulled one final sheet from the back pocket of the folder.

She read it.

Her entire expression changed.

“Michael…”

Dad turned.

“What?””

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“This isn’t only about stolen money or the house.””

She slowly raised the document.

May you like

“It’s about what happened the night Grace’s mother was taken to that facility.””

And Vanessa suddenly ran for the front door.
