Chapter 12: The Person I Trusted Most

Nobody spoke after I showed them the picture.

The person standing outside wasn’t clear.

Only a shadow.

A figure near the trees across the street.

But the message was clear.

Someone wanted us to doubt each other.

My father looked at me.

“Grace.””

I looked away.

The worst part wasn’t the message.

It was that a small part of me wondered if it could be true.

Because everyone had lied.

Vanessa.

My father.

People who were supposed to protect me.

The detective took my phone.

“Has this number contacted you before?””

“No.””

He studied the image.

“We’ll trace it.””

Claire looked at my father.

“You need to tell Grace everything.””

My father closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Now.””

The room became silent.

My father sat down.

Then he looked at me.

“There is something I never told you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What?””

“The night your mother disappeared…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“I wasn’t home.””

The words hit me.

“Why?””

He looked down.

“Because Vanessa called me.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel stepped forward.

“She called you?””

My father nodded.

“She said your mother was threatening to destroy our family.””

I stared.

“And you believed her?””

“At the time…”

He swallowed.

“I was angry.””

My voice became quiet.

“Angry at Mom?””

“Yes.””

I looked down.

“So you left.””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“How long?””

“Three days.””

My eyes filled.

“Three days?””

He nodded.

“I thought your mother was going to come after me legally.””

“And she was sick.””

“Yes.””

“And alone.””

He covered his face.

“Yes.””

The room was silent.

Then he whispered:

“That is the mistake I have regretted every day.””

I didn’t know what to feel.

Anger.

Sadness.

Disappointment.

All of it.

“But you said she abandoned us.””

His voice broke.

“Because I didn’t know the truth.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Because you didn’t look for it.””

He had no answer.

And that hurt more.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Who knew Vanessa called you?””

My father looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Maybe someone who wanted him away.””

Claire nodded.

“Someone who knew his absence would create an opportunity.””

The detective’s phone rang.

He stepped outside to answer.

When he returned, his expression was serious.

“We traced the message.””

Everyone stood.

“Who was it?””

The detective looked at me.

“The number belongs to someone connected to this family.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Your father.””

The room exploded into silence.

My father stood.

“What?””

The detective held up the report.

“The number was registered under Michael Carter.””

I looked at my father.

He looked horrified.

“I never sent that.””

Claire immediately stepped in.

“Could someone have used his account?””

The detective nodded.

“That’s possible.””

Daniel looked around.

“Then someone has access to his information.””

My father slowly turned.

Toward the hallway.

Toward the upstairs office.

Toward the room where Vanessa had spent years controlling everything.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

A message.

From the same number.

He opened it.

Then handed me the phone.

The message contained only one sentence.

*Your father is telling you half the truth. Ask him what happened after he left your mother alone.*

I looked at my father.

He looked like he already knew what question was coming.

“Dad…”

He closed his eyes.

“What happened?””

A long silence.

Then he whispered:

“I went back.””

I stared.

“What?””

“I went back to the facility.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“The night before your mother died.””

Nobody moved.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because when I arrived…”

He looked at the floor.

“Someone was already there.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

My father looked toward Vanessa’s empty chair.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother wasn’t alone.””

May you like

He swallowed.

“Vanessa was with her.”” :::
