Chapter 5: The House That Wasn’t Ours
I couldn’t speak.
The entire ride home felt unreal.
The house looked exactly the same when I arrived.
The same driveway.
The same front porch.
The same windows where I used to wait for my father to come home from work.
But suddenly, it didn’t feel like my home anymore.
It felt like a place where everyone knew a secret except me.
When I walked inside, Vanessa was sitting in the living room with Madison.
Both of them looked up.
Vanessa smiled.
“You’re late.””
I ignored her.
“Who owns this house?””
The smile disappeared.
Madison looked at her mother.
Vanessa slowly stood.
“Where did you hear that?””
“Answer me.””
My voice surprised even me.
For once, I wasn’t scared.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You’ve been talking to Daniel.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stayed silent.
She nodded.
“I knew he would interfere.””
“Why are you afraid of him?””
“I’m not.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
She laughed quietly.
“The truth?””
She walked toward the kitchen.
“The truth is your father was weak.””
My chest tightened.
“Don’t talk about him like that.””
“Why not?””
She turned around.
“Because it’s true.””
Madison watched from the couch.
“You don’t understand what Mom had to do.””
I looked at her.
“What did she have to do?””
Madison opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Vanessa answered.
“Protect our future.””
“Our future?””
I pointed upstairs.
“You mean your daughter’s future.””
Madison looked offended.
“She deserves things too.””
I stared at her.
“You took my room.””
“You had it for years.””
I couldn’t believe she said it so casually.
Like time erased ownership.
Like memories didn’t matter.
Then my father walked in.
The moment he saw all three of us standing there, he knew something happened.
“What’s going on?””
I turned to him.
“Is this house yours?””
His expression changed.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“No.””
The word felt like a punch.
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
He looked down.
“I knew about the arrangement.””
“What arrangement?””
He sighed.
“Years ago, when I married Vanessa, she had financial problems.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“Don’t.””
But my father continued.
“She offered a solution.””
I looked between them.
“What solution?””
“She said she could refinance the house.””
“And?””
“And I signed paperwork.””
My hands shook.
“Without reading it?””
“I trusted her.””
The room went quiet.
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You’re making me look like the villain.””
I turned toward her.
“You’re the one who changed my life.””
She stepped closer.
“No. Your father did.””
My father flinched.
That hurt to see.
Because she wasn’t just hurting me.
She was hurting him too.
Then my phone buzzed.
Another message from Daniel.
I opened it.
There was a photo attached.
A scanned document.
At the top was the name of the house trust.
My eyes moved down.
Then stopped.
Because the document showed something impossible.
A beneficiary.
Someone who had never been mentioned.
Someone whose name I recognized.
My mother.
My biological mother.
The woman Vanessa always said abandoned us.
I looked up.
“My mom was involved?””
My father froze.
Vanessa’s face turned white.
“What did you see?””
I held the phone tighter.
“Why is my mother’s name on the ownership papers?””
Nobody answered.

Then my father whispered something that made my entire world collapse.
“Because she never abandoned you.””
