Chapter 13: The Final Conversation

The room went completely silent.

Not the kind of silence that happens when people have nothing to say.

The kind that happens when everyone is afraid of what comes next.

I stared at my father.

“Vanessa was with my mother?””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked broken.

“I don’t know.””

I stood up.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“You do know.””

My father looked away.

“You just don’t want to say it.””

The detective stepped closer.

“Mr. Carter, this is important.””

My father rubbed his face.

“I went to the facility because I realized something was wrong.””

“When?””

“After Vanessa told me your mother refused to speak to me.””

My hands tightened.

“You believed her.””

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“But something didn’t feel right.””

“What happened when you got there?””

My father stared at the floor.

“Your mother was awake.””

I stopped breathing.

“She was awake?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she call me?””

His eyes filled.

“Because she tried.””

The words cut through me.

“What?””

My father’s voice shook.

“She asked about you immediately.””

I covered my mouth.

“She asked if you were okay.””

A tear rolled down my face.

“All these years…”

My father nodded.

“I know.””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He closed his eyes.

“When I entered her room, Vanessa was already there.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What was she doing?””

My father hesitated.

“She had documents.””

Claire immediately looked up.

“What kind of documents?””

“Legal papers.””

My father looked at me.

“She was trying to convince your mother to sign something.””

My stomach turned.

“She was still trying to take the house.””

“Yes.””

The detective wrote something down.

“What happened next?””

My father’s voice became quieter.

“Your mother refused.””

“What did Vanessa do?””

“She got angry.””

Nobody moved.

“She told your mother that nobody would believe her.””

My hands shook.

“And you just stood there?””

My father looked like the question physically hurt him.

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“And you left.””

“Yes.””

The honesty made it worse.

My father wiped his eyes.

“I heard your mother tell Vanessa one thing.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She said, ‘Grace will know the truth one day.’”

The room went still.

Claire looked at the documents.

“That’s why she created the evidence trail.””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew Vanessa would try to erase everything.””

The detective turned toward my father.

“Did Vanessa know you were there?””

“Yes.””

“Did she know you heard the conversation?””

My father looked away.

“No.””

The detective exchanged a glance with Claire.

“That changes things.””

I looked at the detective.

“How?””

“If Vanessa believed your father never knew the truth, she could continue controlling the narrative.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

From Vanessa.

*You want the truth? Come alone.*

Claire immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Dad took my phone.

“You’re not going.””

I looked at him.

“She knows something.””

“She’s trying to control you again.””

But I saw something in his face.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

The message continued.

*Ask your father why he left the room after your mother begged him to stay.*

My father froze.

I looked at him.

“Is that true?””

His silence answered.

“Dad?””

He sat down.

“I left.””

“Why?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

I stared.

“My mother was dying.””

“I know.””

“And you walked away.””

“I thought I was protecting you from more pain.””

I laughed bitterly.

“By letting me believe she abandoned me?””

He had no defense.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Grace.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t go alone.””

I looked at Vanessa’s message.

Then back at everyone.

“She wants me angry.””

Claire nodded.

“She does.””

“She wants me to react.””

“Yes.””

I picked up my phone.

“Then I won’t.””

The detective looked at me.

“What are you going to do?””

May you like

I stared at the message.

“I’m going to make her talk.””
