Chapter 4: The Name From the Past
I stared at the message on my phone until the letters blurred.
The name at the bottom wasn’t possible.
Not after all these years.
Not after everyone told me that person was gone forever.
*— Daniel*
My father’s older brother.
The man nobody in our family talked about.
I looked up at my dad.
He was still standing near my desk, staring at the papers Vanessa had placed there.
“Dad,” I said quietly.
His eyes moved toward me.
“Who is Daniel?””
The room changed instantly.
My father’s face lost all emotion.
Vanessa looked at him.
Not at me.
At him.
And that told me everything.
“You know exactly who that is,” I said.
My father swallowed.
“Where did you hear that name?””
I held up my phone.
“From him.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
I moved my phone away.
“No.””
Her expression hardened.
“This is exactly what I’m talking about. You’re letting strangers manipulate you.””
“Strangers?””
I looked at my father.
“Is your brother a stranger?””
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
My father sat down slowly.
“Daniel and I haven’t spoken in years.””
“Why?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“That’s complicated.””
“No, it isn’t.””
I pointed at the papers.
“My entire room is being taken away. My place in this house is being taken away. Someone is telling me not to trust Vanessa. I deserve to know why.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Your father made mistakes in the past.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What kind of mistakes?””
She didn’t answer.
My father looked at her.
“Vanessa.””
She immediately became quiet.
That was the first time I saw something I had never seen before.
Vanessa wasn’t controlling the conversation.
She was waiting for my father to decide.
And that scared me.
“I want to talk to Daniel,” I said.
My father stood up.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
“Why?””
“Because he’s not part of this family anymore.””
I stared at him.
“Why are you afraid of him?””
His face tightened.
“I’m not afraid.””
“Then let me call him.””
“No.””
The room went silent.
A normal father would explain.
A normal father would say why.
Mine just looked terrified.
That night, after everyone went to sleep, I sat on my bed with my phone in my hand.
I didn’t know if contacting Daniel was the right thing.
But I knew one thing.
I couldn’t keep trusting people who refused to tell me the truth.
I typed a message.
*I need to know what happened.*
For almost ten minutes, nothing happened.
Then my phone vibrated.
A reply.
*Meet me tomorrow. Alone.*
I stared at the words.
Then another message appeared.
*Your father didn’t give away your room. He gave away something much bigger.*
My heart started racing.
The next afternoon, I met Daniel at a small coffee shop across town.
I recognized him immediately.
He looked older than my father.
Tired.
But his eyes were kind.
“You look just like him,” Daniel said.
I sat down.
“My father?””
He nodded.
“Before everything changed.””
I didn’t waste time.
“What did Vanessa do?””
Daniel looked around before answering.
“She convinced your father to sign documents he didn’t fully understand.””
“What documents?””
“Ownership transfers.””
I frowned.
“She said Dad agreed.””
“He did.””
My stomach dropped.
“But?””
Daniel leaned closer.
“But he thought he was protecting you.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Your father believed Vanessa was only changing financial arrangements.””
“And she wasn’t?””
“No.””
The silence between us grew.
“She changed the documents.””
“How?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She added conditions.””
My hands tightened around my cup.
“What conditions?””
“That if you challenged her authority in the house, you could be removed from certain areas of the property.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“She planned this?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because Madison wanted that room.””
I almost laughed.
“All of this… because of a bedroom?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became serious.
“The bedroom was just the first step.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What’s the second step?””
Before Daniel could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t respond.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His face became pale.
Then he handed the phone to me.
A woman’s voice came through.
“Are you the child who still thinks your father chose you?””
I froze.
“Who is this?””
The woman laughed softly.
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
My grip tightened.
“What question should I ask?””
Her answer made my blood run cold.
“Ask why your father never told you who really owns this house.””
The call ended.
May you like
And Daniel whispered the words I never expected to hear.
“Your father isn’t the owner.””
