Chapter 10: The Night My Mother Disappeared
Vanessa’s hand was already on the front door when my father shouted.
“Stop.””
She froze.
Not because he yelled.
Because of the way he said it.
There was no confusion anymore.
No hesitation.
No excuse left for her to hide behind.
Vanessa slowly turned around.
For years, I had seen her control every room she entered.
She controlled conversations.
She controlled decisions.
She controlled my father’s doubts.
But now she was standing in the doorway, and for the first time, she looked like someone who knew the truth was finally catching up.
Claire held the document tightly.
“You don’t want to run.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Claire looked at her.
“Actually, I do.””
My father stepped closer.
“What happened that night?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes moved toward him.
“You’re really going to believe them over me?””
My father’s face tightened.
“You lied about my daughter’s mother.””
“I protected this family.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You protected yourself.””
The words hit harder than any argument I had ever heard between them.
Madison stood frozen near the stairs.
“Mom…”
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
“Go upstairs.””
Madison didn’t move.
“Mom, what happened?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“I said go upstairs.””
“No.””
Everyone looked at Madison.
She wiped her tears.
“I spent years thinking Grace was the problem.””
Her voice shook.
“I thought she was spoiled. I thought she hated us.””
She looked at me.
“But I heard everything tonight.””
Vanessa stared at her.
“Madison.””
“I heard what you said.””
A long silence followed.
Then Madison whispered:
“You knew her mother was trying to come back.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
That was enough.
My father noticed too.
“You knew.””
Vanessa looked away.
Claire placed the document on the table.
“This is a copy of the emergency facility report.””
She pointed to a section.
“The night Grace’s mother was admitted, the listed contact person was Vanessa.””
My father stepped closer.
“Why?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Claire continued.
“Your wife signed paperwork stating that Grace’s mother was unable to make independent decisions.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Claire looked at me carefully.
“It means Vanessa claimed your mother was not capable of managing her own affairs.””
My stomach dropped.
“But she was?””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
Claire looked at Vanessa.
“That is what we need her to explain.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“She was sick.””
My father stared at her.
“She was dying.””
The room went silent.
“She needed help,” Vanessa continued.
“And you helped her?”” my father asked.
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I did what nobody else would.””
I almost believed the sadness on her face.
Almost.
Then Claire spoke.
“By changing her emergency contacts?””
Vanessa looked away.
“By controlling access to her daughter?””
Silence.
“By preventing her from reaching her husband?””
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“She was unstable.””
My father stepped back.
“Stop.””
The word came out quietly.
But everyone heard it.
“Don’t say that.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“It’s true.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You used that because nobody could ask her.””
I looked at my father.
“What happened after she went there?””
He closed his eyes.
“I don’t know.””
That sentence broke something inside him.
“I thought she left.””
My voice became softer.
“You believed she abandoned me.””
He nodded.
“I thought she chose not to come back.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“She made sure you believed that.””
Nobody denied it.
Then Claire opened the document again.
“There is one more thing.””
She turned the page.
“Your mother attempted to update the trust documents after she was admitted.””
My father looked up.
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because the request was never processed.””
“Why?””
Claire pointed to the signature line.
“Someone withdrew the request.””
My eyes moved to Vanessa.
She said nothing.
My father whispered:
“You signed her name.””
Vanessa’s silence was louder than a confession.
Madison covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.””
Vanessa finally broke.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” my father said.
“I understand perfectly.””
She looked at him desperately.
“I was trying to keep everything together.””
“You stole her voice.””
“I was protecting Madison.””
“You destroyed Grace’s family.””
“I had nothing!””
The scream shocked everyone.
Vanessa’s face twisted with years of anger.
“I had nothing when I came into this family!””
She pointed toward me.
“She had everything!””
I stepped back.
“What?””
“She had the house. The trust. The memories. Your father’s attention.””
Her voice cracked.
“And I was supposed to just stand there?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Madison whispered:
“Mom…”
Vanessa looked at her.
“You don’t know what it feels like to always come second.””
Madison shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“But I know what it feels like to hurt someone who didn’t deserve it.””
Vanessa stared at her daughter.
Then at me.
And for a moment, I saw regret.
But it disappeared quickly.
Because her eyes moved toward the folder.
Toward the evidence.
And I realized something.
She wasn’t sorry.
She was calculating.
Claire noticed too.
“Where is the original trust amendment?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Still nothing.
Then my father’s phone rang.
He looked down.
His face changed.
“What?””
I moved closer.
“Who is it?””
He put the phone on speaker.
A man’s voice came through.
“Mr. Carter, this is Detective Harris.””
Everyone froze.
“We need to speak with you immediately.””
My father looked confused.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because we found another set of documents hidden under Vanessa Carter’s name.””
My heart started pounding.
“What documents?””
May you like
The detective answered:
“The original hospital records from the night your first wife disappeared.””
