Chapter 3: The Signature I Was Never Supposed to See

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat on my bedroom floor surrounded by old memories, holding a piece of paper that felt heavier than anything I had ever held before.

My father’s signature was right there.

Real.

Clear.

Impossible to deny.

But I still couldn’t understand it.

The next morning, Vanessa opened my door before I was ready.

“You’re still here?””

I looked up from the floor.

“Yes.””

She sighed like I was an inconvenience.

“I gave you twelve hours.””

I held up the paper.

“Did Dad sign this?””

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Then it disappeared.

“Where did you get that?””

“So it’s real?””

Vanessa stepped into the room.

“You shouldn’t go through things that aren’t yours.””

“My own documents aren’t mine?””

“You’re twisting this.””

I stood up.

“What did Dad agree to?””

She folded her arms.

“Your father made a decision.””

“What decision?””

“A family decision.””

“No. You made a decision.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You need to stop acting like a victim.””

I almost laughed.

“You took my bedroom.””

“You’re being dramatic.””

“You told me to sleep in a storage room.””

“And you’re still alive.””

The cruelty of the sentence shocked me.

Before I could answer, Madison appeared behind her.

“Mom, Dad is home.””

Vanessa immediately looked at me.

“Don’t start anything.””

I stared at her.

“You mean don’t ask questions?””

She walked away.

A few minutes later, my father entered the room.

I expected him to look angry.

Instead, he looked exhausted.

“Can we talk?””

I held up the paper.

“Yeah. I think we need to.””

His eyes landed on it.

The color left his face.

“Where did you get that?””

“So it’s real.””

He looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

“Dad.””

He sat down slowly.

“I was going to explain.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

“After I moved into the storage room?””

“No.””

“After Madison took all my things?””

“No.””

“Then when?””

My father rubbed his forehead.

“I made an agreement with Vanessa.””

“What kind of agreement?””

He looked toward the hallway.

“She needed security.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She and Madison were worried about their future.””

“And I’m what?””

He looked at me.

“You’re my daughter.””

“Then why does it feel like I’m the one being removed?””

His eyes filled slightly.

But he didn’t say anything.

That silence hurt.

Then Vanessa walked in holding a folder.

“You need to understand something.””

I looked at her.

“Every time you fight this, you make things worse.””

I laughed.

“You’re threatening me?””

“No.””

She placed the folder on my desk.

“I’m reminding you that you have no control over this.””

I opened it.

Inside were more papers.

Housing documents.

Financial records.

And something that made my heart stop.

My father’s signature appeared again.

But this time, beneath it was a sentence that I read three times.

“Primary residence rights transferred.””

I looked at my father.

“What did you do?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Your father chose his new family.””

The room went silent.

I stared at my father.

“Is that true?””

He looked broken.

But he still didn’t deny it.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

One sentence.

My blood went cold.

“Don’t trust Vanessa. She never showed your father the whole agreement.””

I looked up slowly.

Because the message wasn’t just a warning.

May you like

It was signed with a name I knew.

A name that had disappeared from our family years ago.
