Chapter 6: The Truth My Mother Left Behind
I didn’t remember leaving the house.
One moment I was standing in the living room.
The next, I was sitting in my car outside, staring at the steering wheel.
My mother.
Her name was on the papers.
The woman Vanessa spent years describing as someone who walked away.
Someone who didn’t care.
Someone who left my father alone.
But now her name was attached to the house.
I wiped my eyes and drove back to Daniel’s place.
He opened the door before I knocked.
“You found out.””
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
He sighed.
“Some of it.””
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel stepped aside.
“Come in.””
His apartment was small.
Nothing like our house.
No expensive furniture.
No perfect decorations.
Just boxes of old papers stacked against the wall.
He picked up a folder.
“This belonged to your mother.””
My hands shook as I took it.
Inside were letters.
Dozens of them.
All addressed to my father.
I looked at the dates.
They started years ago.
Before Vanessa.
Before the wedding.
Before everything.
“She wrote these?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t Dad get them?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because someone made sure he didn’t.””
My stomach tightened.
“Vanessa?””
He nodded.
I opened one of the letters.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the words felt personal.
I need you to know I never stopped loving our daughter.
I stopped reading.
My vision blurred.
“She was alive?””
Daniel sat down.
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
He hesitated.
That scared me.
“Daniel.””
“She passed away three years ago.””
The room became silent.
I looked down at the letter.
Three years.
The same year Vanessa started changing everything in the house.
“She tried to contact Dad?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she discovered something.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at the folder.
“Your mother found out Vanessa wasn’t just trying to control the house.””
My hands tightened.
“She was stealing?””
Daniel didn’t answer directly.
Instead, he opened another document.
A bank statement.
I looked at the numbers.
My eyes widened.
“What is this?””
“Money from the trust.””
“How much?””
Daniel pointed.
“Over six years.””
I counted the numbers.
The amount was impossible.
“She took this?””
“She moved it.””
“To where?””
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s what I’ve been trying to find out.””
I stood up.
“Then why didn’t you tell Dad?””
“I tried.””
“And?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Vanessa showed him something first.””
“What?””
“A video.””
I frowned.
“What video?””
“She made your father believe Daniel was trying to destroy his marriage.””
I shook my head.
“That’s insane.””
“Yes.””
He looked at me seriously.
“And it worked.””
My phone suddenly rang.
Dad.
I answered immediately.
“Dad?””
His voice was quiet.
“Where are you?””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa knows you spoke to Daniel.””
I froze.
“How?””
A long pause.
Then my father whispered:
“She found the documents.””
My heart raced.
“What documents?””
“The ones your mother left.””
I stood up.
“Dad, what is happening?””
His voice cracked.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
I waited.
“Do not come back to the house tonight.””
My blood went cold.
“Why?””
Because I heard something in the background.
A door closing.
Vanessa’s voice.
Then my father whispered one final sentence before the call cut off.
“She knows you found the truth… and she’s not trying to take your room anymore.””
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
Then another message appeared.
Not from Daniel.
Not from my father.
From Vanessa.
*Come home if you want answers. But bring the papers.*
And underneath it was a picture.
May you like
A picture of my bedroom.
With someone standing inside it.
