Chapter 9: The Truth Daniel Had Been Hiding
The storage unit became completely silent.
I stared at Daniel Whitmore.
"What did you just say?""
Daniel placed his briefcase on the floor.
"Your mother changed her mind before she died.""
David stepped forward.
"That's an extraordinary allegation. Do you have evidence?""
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
"I have the original documents.""
The investigator immediately moved between him and the filing cabinet.
"You're not touching anything.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Emily, I knew your mother for fifteen years. I helped her build that trust. I was there when she became sick. I was there when she made decisions about your future.""
"Then why did you take my money?""
"Because there were things you weren't told.""
I shook my head.
"My mother wanted me to go to medical school.""
Daniel's expression softened.
"She did. But she also knew the trust was becoming a problem.""
David crossed his arms.
"Explain.""
Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a document.
It was dated three days before my mother's death.
He handed it to the investigator.
"This was the original amendment.""
David examined the document.
His eyebrows drew together.
The amendment appeared to transfer control of the trust to Daniel.
But it also contained a clause allowing distributions to another beneficiary.
Kayla Bennett.
I stared at the page.
"That's the document Vanessa showed us.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No. This is the original.""
David compared the signatures.
"There's something different about the witness section.""
Daniel nodded.
"Because Vanessa's signature was added later.""
Dad stepped forward.
"Are you admitting you participated in falsifying these documents?""
Daniel ignored him.
He looked directly at me.
"Your mother was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Of losing control of her money. Of what would happen to you after she died. She believed your father might remarry and that another woman could eventually gain access to your inheritance.""
I frowned.
"She was afraid of Vanessa?""
Daniel hesitated.
"She was afraid of what Vanessa might become.""
Dad's face hardened.
"Then why did you help her?""
Daniel looked away.
For the first time, he seemed uncomfortable.
"Because I made a mistake.""
David laughed without humor.
"A mistake involving $850,000?""
Daniel raised his voice.
"I didn't take everything!""
"Where is the money?""
"Some went into investments. Some paid for legitimate expenses.""
"Which expenses?"" David demanded.
Daniel didn't answer.
The investigator took the document from him.
"Mr. Whitmore, you'll need to answer these questions formally.""
Daniel looked at me again.
"Emily, your mother left something else.""
I felt my pulse quicken.
"What?""
"A second letter.""
David immediately asked, "Where?""
Daniel pointed toward the filing cabinet.
"Behind the false bottom.""
The investigator examined the cabinet.
After several minutes, he discovered a thin wooden panel at the back.
Behind it was a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front.
This time, the handwriting looked shakier.
David examined the seal.
Then he handed it to me.
I opened it carefully.
My sweet Emily,
If you are reading this, then the people I feared may have succeeded in interfering with your inheritance.
I want you to know something before you hear anything from them.
I did not choose Vanessa to become your guardian, and I never gave her permission to control your money.
Daniel knows this.
But Daniel also knows something else.
I looked up.
Daniel was watching me.
I continued.
There is a separate account that does not appear in the ordinary trust statements.
My breath caught.
It was created to protect a portion of your inheritance in case the main trust was compromised.
Dad leaned closer.
"What account?""
I continued reading.
The account is held under the name of the Carter Education Foundation. It contains the money I specifically reserved for your medical education.
David looked surprised.
"An independent foundation?""
I nodded.
My mother's letter continued.
Emily, I have placed the access instructions with the person I trust most to protect you.
His name is Samuel Reed.
I stopped.
Dr. Samuel Reed.
The doctor from the hospital.
Daniel suddenly looked uncomfortable.
Dad noticed.
"You know about this account.""
Daniel didn't answer.
David stepped closer.
"Mr. Whitmore, were you aware of the Carter Education Foundation?""
Daniel finally nodded.
"Yes.""
"How much money does it contain?""
He looked at me.
"Approximately $250,000.""
My knees nearly gave out.
Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
A separate account my mother had created to protect my education.
"Why didn't you tell us?"" I asked.
Daniel looked down.
"Because I was instructed not to disclose it until you turned eighteen.""
"That was seven months ago!""
"I know.""
"Then why didn't you contact me?""
He remained silent.
David's expression became cold.
"Because you intended to take control of that account too, didn't you?""
Daniel didn't respond.
The investigator stepped closer.
"Mr. Whitmore, I'm going to ask you to come with us.""
Daniel raised both hands.
"I haven't done anything illegal.""
"That will be determined during the investigation.""
As the investigator escorted him toward the exit, Daniel suddenly turned around.
"Emily!""
I looked at him.
"There's something else you need to know.""
"What?""
He swallowed.
"Vanessa wasn't the one who first approached me about changing the trust.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Then who was?""
Daniel glanced toward Dad.
For several seconds, I couldn't understand why he was looking at him.
Then he spoke.
"Your father.""
The words landed like a physical blow.
I turned toward Dad.
He looked stunned.
"That's a lie.""
Daniel continued.
"Richard came to my office shortly after Elizabeth died. He asked whether there was a way to release some of the money early.""
Dad shook his head.
"I asked about the education account. Nothing else.""
Daniel gave a bitter smile.
"You asked me to prepare a document giving you temporary control over the trust.""
"Because I was her father!""
"And you signed it.""
David immediately turned toward Dad.
"Richard, is that true?""
Dad's face had gone pale.
I stared at him.
"Dad?""
He looked at me.
"Emily, I need you to listen.""
"Did you sign a document giving yourself control of Mom's money?""
He took a step toward me.
"I never intended to steal from you.""
"That's not what I asked.""
He looked down.
Then he whispered:
"Yes.""
I stepped backward.
The investigator stopped Daniel at the doorway.
David closed the folder.
And I realized that the story I'd believed my entire life was about to fall apart.

Because perhaps Vanessa hadn't been the first person to betray my mother's wishes.
Perhaps the person I trusted most had opened the door for her.
