Chapter 7: The $50,000 Transfer That Exposed Everyone
"That transfer happened this morning?""
Dad leaned over David's laptop, his face turning pale.
David nodded.
"According to the bank's preliminary records, fifty thousand dollars was transferred from an account connected to the original trust. The recipient is an offshore financial company registered in the Cayman Islands.""
I stared at the screen.
"Who authorized it?""
David enlarged the transaction details.
The authorization showed two names.
Daniel Whitmore.
And Kayla Bennett.
Kayla immediately started shaking her head.
"No. I didn't do that.""
David looked at her.
"Are you saying you never authorized a transaction from this account?""
"I've never even seen that account!""
Dad turned toward her.
"Kayla, your name is on the account that received hundreds of thousands of dollars.""
"My mother told me it was an investment account!""
"Did you ever withdraw anything?""
Kayla began crying.
"She gave me money sometimes. She said it came from her savings.""
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
"How much?""
Kayla wiped her cheeks.
"I don't know. Maybe thirty thousand.""
"Thirty thousand dollars?""
"Mom said it was a gift!""
I looked at the girl who had jingled the Mercedes keys in my face just days earlier.
"You knew I couldn't afford college.""
Kayla lowered her head.
"I didn't know it was your money.""
"But you knew I was struggling.""
She didn't answer.
Dad walked toward the window and rubbed his forehead.
"This is unbelievable.""
David closed the laptop.
"We need to contact the financial institution immediately. The priority is stopping further transfers and preserving the records.""
He made several calls.
For nearly an hour, he spoke with bank representatives, investigators, and his legal team.
I sat silently beside Dad.
Then Kayla moved toward me.
"Emily?""
I didn't look up.
"Please, just listen.""
"What?""
She sat across from me.
"I know I acted terribly. I shouldn't have made fun of you about the car.""
I looked at her.
"You thanked me for buying it.""
Her face crumpled.
"I thought Mom had paid.""
"You didn't wonder why she suddenly had seventy-six thousand dollars?""
Kayla stared at her hands.
"She told me she'd inherited money from her parents.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Her parents are both alive.""
Kayla started crying harder.
Then she whispered something I hadn't expected.
"Mom told me your mother had left money for both of us.""
I stared at her.
"Both of us?""
"She said Elizabeth wanted us to share everything.""
"That's not true.""
"I know that now.""
I stood.
"How convenient that you only learned the truth when the money disappeared.""
Kayla flinched.
Dad intervened.
"Emily, I know you're angry, but let's let David establish what happened.""
I turned toward him.
"I'm not angry because Kayla has a car. I'm angry because everyone in this house watched me work myself sick while they spent money that wasn't theirs.""
Dad had no answer.
That afternoon, the bank confirmed that the suspicious transfer had been temporarily flagged.
However, the recipient company had already received several earlier payments.
David explained that recovering those funds could require international cooperation.
Then his phone rang again.
He listened.
His expression changed.
"Are you certain?""
A pause.
"Send me the document.""
He ended the call.
"What is it?"" Dad asked.
David looked at Kayla.
"The bank has located the original application used to open the account in your name.""
Kayla swallowed.
"And?""
"The application was submitted using your personal information when you were sixteen.""
Kayla looked confused.
"I was sixteen?""
David nodded.
"Someone signed the application as your legal guardian.""
Dad frowned.
"Who?""
David placed the document on the table.
Vanessa Bennett.
Kayla's mother.
But there was another detail.
The account had been opened at a branch in downtown Atlanta.
And the witness signature belonged to Daniel Whitmore.
Dad stared at the page.
"So they were working together.""
David didn't answer.
He was examining the next document.
Then he pointed to a section near the bottom.
"There's a recorded authorization for the original transfer.""
"What does it say?"" I asked.
David read it carefully.
"'Funds to be distributed according to the private agreement between the trustee and the family representative.''"
"Who's the family representative?""
He turned the page.
The name was Vanessa's.
Kayla buried her face in her hands.
"I didn't know.""
I wanted to believe her.
But I also remembered how proudly she'd displayed that Mercedes.
How she'd laughed when I told her I might not be able to attend college.
Before anyone could speak, Dad's phone rang.
It was Vanessa.
He answered on speaker.
"Where are you?""
Her voice was frantic.
"Richard, I need you to listen to me.""
"Where are you?""
"At home with Kayla's aunt. Please, I need you to withdraw the police report.""
Dad looked at David.
"Why?""
"Because you've misunderstood everything.""
"Then explain the fifty-thousand-dollar transfer.""
Silence.
Then Vanessa said something that made David immediately reach for a pen.
"Daniel was supposed to move that money before the account got frozen.""
Dad's voice hardened.
"Why?""
"Because the original documents are going to expose everything.""
David leaned toward the phone.
"Mrs. Carter, this is David Mitchell. What original documents?""
Vanessa went silent.
Then she whispered:
"The ones Elizabeth signed before she died.""
David exchanged a look with Dad.
"Are you claiming Elizabeth authorized these transactions?""
Vanessa suddenly became defensive.
"I didn't say that.""
"Then what are you saying?""
Her voice broke.
"Daniel has the original papers. He has everything.""
The call disconnected.
David immediately called the investigator handling the matter.
When he finished, he looked at me.
"Emily, we need to find Daniel Whitmore before he destroys those original documents.""
Dad grabbed his keys.
"Where is he?""
David shook his head.
"His office was closed this morning. His home address is empty.""
Then Kayla quietly spoke.
"I know where he is.""
Everyone turned toward her.
She swallowed.
"Mom went to meet him yesterday.""
"Where?"" Dad asked.
Kayla hesitated.
"At the private storage facility near the airport.""
May you like
She looked at David.
"And she told me they were going to destroy something before anyone found it.""
