Chapter 6: The House My Mother Paid For
For several seconds, I couldn't process what Kayla had said.
The house.
The beautiful four-bedroom house in a quiet Atlanta neighborhood.
The house where I'd celebrated my eighteenth birthday.
The house where Vanessa had repeatedly told me I should be grateful for having a roof over my head.
My mother's money had paid for it.
Dad slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"Tell me she's lying.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Richard, it's complicated.""
"How much?""
She remained silent.
"HOW MUCH DID YOU TAKE?""
Vanessa flinched.
Kayla answered instead.
"Mom said it was around $210,000.""
Dad grabbed the edge of the table.
"Two hundred and ten thousand dollars?""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"It was an investment! We needed a bigger house!""
"You told me you used the proceeds from selling your old property!""
"I did!""
"Then why did you need Emily's inheritance?""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Because the bank wouldn't approve the entire amount.""
I felt my stomach twist.
"So my mother paid for the house you moved into?""
Vanessa glared at me.
"You lived here too!""
"I was eleven when Mom died!""
"And you had a home!""
I stared at her.
"You keep saying that like I should thank you for stealing from me.""
Dad slammed his hand against the table.
"Stop talking to her that way!""
Vanessa's expression changed.
For years, she'd been used to Dad calming every disagreement by asking me to be patient.
This time, he wasn't protecting her.
David opened his briefcase.
"Let's establish exactly what we're dealing with.""
He placed three documents on the table.
"The first concerns the trust's original balance. The second records the property purchase. The third identifies the transfers made to Daniel Whitmore's financial company.""
Dad studied them.
"How much went into the house?""
"Approximately $210,000 from the trust, according to the available transaction records.""
"And the Mercedes?""
"Seventy-six thousand eight hundred dollars.""
"What about the credit account?""
David turned toward me.
"That matter is separate, but it appears your personal information was used to obtain credit without your authorization.""
Dad looked furious.
"Can she be arrested?""
"That decision belongs to law enforcement and prosecutors. But the evidence needs to be preserved.""
Vanessa began pacing.
"You're all ignoring the fact that I raised Emily!""
I looked at her.
"You didn't raise me. You lived in the same house.""
"I cooked for you!""
"I cooked for myself most nights.""
"I bought your school supplies!""
"With my mother's money?""
She stopped.
For once, she had no immediate answer.
Then Kayla spoke.
"Mom, just tell them the truth.""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"You're supposed to be on my side!""
Kayla's eyes filled with tears.
"I am your daughter. But you told me Emily agreed to pay for the car.""
I looked at her.
"Why would you believe that?""
"Because Mom showed me a document with your signature.""
My heart stopped.
"What document?""
Kayla reached into her handbag.
She pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
"I found this in Mom's bedroom yesterday.""
David took it carefully.
It was a consent form authorizing a transfer of funds from my education account.
At the bottom was my name.
Emily Carter.
But the signature looked wrong.
I leaned closer.
"That's not my handwriting.""
David examined it.
"Do you recognize the date?""
I looked at the top.
It was dated three months earlier.
I'd been in school that day.
I had never signed anything like it.
David placed it inside a protective folder.
"This will need forensic examination.""
Vanessa snatched at the paper.
David pulled it away.
"Do not touch that document.""
She backed off.
Dad looked at her.
"Did you forge Emily's signature?""
Vanessa started crying.
"I was trying to keep the family together!""
"By stealing her identity?""
"I had expenses!""
"Then you should have gotten a job!""
Her face turned red.
"You don't understand what it's like to be a woman who has to depend on someone else's money!""
Dad stared at her.
"You married me. You had a home, food, and everything you needed.""
"And your daughter had everything!""
I stepped forward.
"Stop saying that!""
My voice echoed through the dining room.
"You had a daughter who got a brand-new Mercedes. I had a mother who died before she could watch me graduate high school. And you stole the one thing she left me.""
Nobody spoke.
I continued.
"You didn't just take money. You took my chance to go to college without worrying about tuition. You took years of my mother's work. And you made me feel guilty for wanting what she wanted me to have.""
Vanessa looked away.
Dad pulled out his phone.
"I'm contacting the police.""
She rushed toward him.
"Richard, please!""
He stepped back.
"Don't touch me.""
"Think about Kayla!""
"I am thinking about my daughters. And one of them has been robbed.""
Kayla started crying.
"Mom, what did you do?""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Everything I did was for you!""
Kayla shook her head.
"I never asked you to steal from Emily.""
Vanessa slapped her handbag onto the table.
"You're both ungrateful!""
She grabbed her car keys and headed for the door.
Dad didn't stop her.
But David did.
"Mrs. Carter, I strongly recommend you remain available to investigators. Leaving now won't make these documents disappear.""
Vanessa glared at him.
Then she turned to Dad.
"You'll regret this.""
Dad answered quietly.
"No. I regret trusting you.""
She stormed out.
The front door slammed.
I sank into a chair.
For the first time, I wondered whether there was anything left of my mother's estate.
David sat beside me.
"Emily, I want you to understand something. The investigation may take time. We cannot promise that every dollar will be recovered.""
I nodded.
"I understand.""
"But there's something else.""
He opened a small envelope he'd brought with him.
Inside was a document bearing my mother's signature.
"This is the original trust instruction. It contains a provision that hasn't been discussed yet.""
Dad leaned forward.
"What provision?""
David looked at me.
"Your mother anticipated that someone might attempt to divert your inheritance. She included a clause requiring an independent review if any unauthorized beneficiary received money from the trust.""
"What happens if that happens?""
"Any assets transferred under fraudulent circumstances may be subject to recovery proceedings. That could include property purchased using trust funds.""
Dad looked at him.
"Are you saying we can recover the house?""
"Potentially, yes. That depends on the evidence and the legal proceedings.""
I looked around the dining room.
The expensive chandelier.
The marble countertops.
The furniture Vanessa had chosen.
All of it suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Then David's phone rang.
He answered, listened for several seconds, and stood.
"Yes. I understand. Please send the documents immediately.""
He ended the call.
Dad asked, "What happened?""
David looked at us.
"Daniel Whitmore's office has just confirmed that the trust withdrawals were authorized through a second financial account.""
"Whose account?"" I asked.
David hesitated.
Then he turned his laptop toward us.
The account holder's name appeared on the screen.
*Kayla Bennett.*
Kayla covered her mouth.
"That's impossible.""
David looked at her.
"Your name is attached to the account that received more than $300,000 from Emily's trust.""
Kayla began shaking her head.
"Mom told me it was my college fund!""
Dad stared at her.
"Three hundred thousand dollars?""
Kayla burst into tears.
"I swear I didn't know!""
I looked at my stepsister.
Then at the transaction history.
There were transfers going back years.
And the newest one had been made just four days earlier.
But the amount wasn't $300,000.
It was another $50,000.
The recipient wasn't Kayla.
It was an offshore financial company.
David zoomed in on the transaction details.
Then he whispered:
May you like
"Someone is still moving your mother's money.""
And the transfer had been authorized that morning.
