Chapter 11: The $250,000 My Mother Hid From Them

I stared at the document.

"You're saying I control the foundation?""

Dr. Reed nodded.

"Your mother wanted you to have full authority once you turned eighteen. She believed you were mature enough to make your own decisions.""

I looked at Dad.

He was sitting silently beside David.

For once, he didn't try to explain anything.

Dr. Reed continued.

"The foundation has been invested conservatively. It hasn't been touched, and the annual statements have been independently audited.""

He opened his computer and showed me the latest report.

The balance was higher than the original amount.

<text weight="semibold" size="2xl" color="success" tabularNums>$287,430</text>

I covered my mouth.

"That's really mine?""

"It's held for your education under the terms of the foundation. Your mother made sure it couldn't be redirected by your father's household or anyone else.""

Dad looked up.

"Elizabeth never told me about this.""

Dr. Reed nodded.

"She wanted one financial arrangement that remained completely independent.""

I looked at my mother's signature.

She had protected this money while fighting for her life.

I couldn't imagine how frightened she must have been.

"Can I use it for Emory?""

"Absolutely. The foundation was designed for that purpose.""

I started crying.

For the first time in weeks, I felt like my future wasn't completely destroyed.

David reviewed the documents.

"The foundation appears to have been properly maintained. We'll arrange the necessary transfer procedures directly with the university.""

I nodded.

Then I remembered something.

"What about the other $850,000?""

Dr. Reed's expression became serious.

"That is a separate matter.""

David opened his briefcase.

"We've located evidence connecting Daniel and Vanessa to the unauthorized transfers. We also have documents suggesting your father's limited administrative authority was used to facilitate changes he did not fully understand.""

Dad lowered his head.

"Can the money be recovered?""

"Some of it may be. We have identified the house down payment, several investment accounts, and transfers to businesses connected to Daniel.""

I looked at David.

"And the Mercedes?""

"That may be subject to recovery proceedings if investigators establish that it was purchased with misappropriated funds.""

I felt a strange mixture of relief and sadness.

Kayla's car was the least of my concerns now.

But I knew the consequences would be serious.

Later that afternoon, David received an update from the investigators.

Daniel had been questioned.

His office had been searched.

Several computers and financial records had been seized.

More importantly, investigators had located an email exchange between Daniel and Vanessa.

David printed the messages.

The first email was dated almost two years earlier.

Vanessa had written:

We need to move the remaining funds before Emily turns eighteen. Once she has legal authority, we lose control.

Daniel had responded:

The original documents must remain consistent. I cannot move everything without creating a paper trail.

Vanessa replied:

Then use the second account. Kayla is still a minor, and I can sign for her.

I felt sick.

They hadn't made a few bad decisions.

They had planned everything.

The next email was even worse.

Richard still believes the trust is under control. Don't involve him unless necessary.

Dad read that sentence twice.

"They were using me.""

David nodded.

"It appears they deliberately kept you unaware of the full extent of the transfers.""

Dad looked at me.

"I swear I didn't know.""

I believed that he hadn't known everything.

But I also knew he'd signed the original amendment.

And that decision had opened the door.

That evening, Kayla called.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

"Emily?""

Her voice sounded small.

"What?""

"I'm at Aunt Linda's.""

"Okay.""

"Mom hasn't come back.""

I sat down.

"How long?""

"Since yesterday.""

"Have you spoken to her?""

"She sent me a message saying I should stay away from the house.""

I closed my eyes.

"What do you want, Kayla?""

She began crying.

"I want to apologize.""

I didn't say anything.

"I know I was awful. I knew you were struggling, and I kept showing off that car. I thought you were jealous.""

"I wasn't jealous.""

"I know that now.""

She paused.

"Mom told me something else.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"She said the money in my account wasn't actually mine. She said she was using my name to hide it from the bank.""

I gripped the phone.

"Did she tell you how much?""

"Three hundred thousand. Maybe more.""

"Where is it?""

"I don't know. But I found something in her laptop.""

"What?""

"A folder with your name.""

I sat upright.

"What kind of folder?""

"Scanned documents. Bank statements. And a video.""

My heartbeat quickened.

"What video?""

Kayla hesitated.

"It's Mom talking to Daniel.""

I looked toward David, who was sitting across the room.

"Can you send it to me?""

"I don't know if I should.""

"Kayla, this is important.""

She whispered:

"There's something else in the video.""

"What?""

"Mom says the trust wasn't originally worth $850,000.""

I frowned.

"What do you mean?""

Kayla's voice trembled.

"She says your mother left more than two million dollars.""

I stopped breathing.

"Two million?""

"That's what she says.""

I looked at David.

He had heard every word.

"Kayla, send the video to David. Don't delete anything.""

She agreed.

A few minutes later, the file arrived.

David opened it.

Vanessa appeared on screen, sitting in what looked like Daniel's office.

She was holding a glass of water.

Daniel sat across from her.

The video began with Vanessa saying:

"Once Emily turns eighteen, we won't be able to keep hiding the accounts.""

Daniel answered:

"Then we need to finish the transfers.""

Vanessa leaned forward.

"And what about the original inheritance?""

Daniel looked directly at her.

"Your husband still doesn't know the actual amount.""

Vanessa smiled.

"Good. Because if Richard ever discovers what Elizabeth really left Emily, he'll realize we've only stolen a fraction.""

David paused the video.

Nobody spoke.

Then he looked at me.

"Emily, we need to find the original estate valuation.""

He searched the documents from the storage unit.

After several minutes, he found a sealed financial summary.

The original estate value was printed on the first page.

<text weight="semibold" size="2xl" color="default" tabularNums>$2,400,000</text>

I stared at it.

My mother hadn't left me $850,000.

She had left me $2.4 million.

And somehow, more than $1.5 million had disappeared without appearing in the records we'd found.

May you like

David slowly closed the folder.

"Now we know why they were so desperate to destroy the original documents.""
