Chapter 13: The $180,000 My Father Couldn't Explain
"One hundred and eighty thousand dollars?""
Dad stared at the bank statements Uncle Michael had placed on the table.
His hands were trembling.
"I've never received that money.""
Michael opened his folder.
"Richard, these are transfers from three separate companies. The deposits started three years ago. Every month, between four and six thousand dollars entered your personal checking account.""
Dad shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
David took the statements and examined them.
"These transactions are real. We need to establish who controlled the sending accounts and whether Richard knowingly accepted the funds.""
I looked at my father.
"Did you ever notice extra money in your account?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"I have a salary. Sometimes I receive bonuses. I assumed the deposits were related to my consulting work.""
"Which company paid you?""
Dad hesitated.
"Whitmore Financial.""
The room went silent.
David slowly lowered the paperwork.
"Daniel's company?""
Dad nodded.
"Daniel told me he was compensating me for helping with some property consultations.""
Michael laughed bitterly.
"You never worked for him, Richard.""
Dad turned.
"What?""
"You signed a few documents for a property project. That's it. You were never an employee or consultant.""
Dad looked at the statements again.
Then he whispered:
"He told me the payments were legitimate.""
I felt something inside me collapse.
My father hadn't necessarily known the money was stolen.
But he'd accepted payments from the very man who had been draining my mother's estate.
"Did you ever ask why Daniel was paying you?""
Dad looked at me.
"I thought he was grateful for my help.""
"For three years?""
He had no answer.
David placed the statements into a folder.
"Richard, you need to disclose every payment you received. If you genuinely believed the money was compensation, we need documentation supporting that belief.""
Dad nodded slowly.
"I'll cooperate.""
Michael leaned back.
"There's something else.""
He opened a second folder.
"This is the original proposal Vanessa sent me.""
The document outlined a plan to use the Savannah property as collateral for a $1.8 million loan.
The proposed borrower was a company registered under Kayla's name.
But the repayment structure was even more disturbing.
The company would receive the loan.
Then the money would be distributed among several accounts.
Vanessa would receive $600,000.
Daniel would receive $450,000.
Richard would receive $180,000.
The remaining funds would go into an offshore account.
I looked at the numbers.
They had planned to take another $1.8 million from an asset my mother had specifically placed in my name.
I turned toward Kayla's empty chair.
"Did she know?""
Michael shook his head.
"I don't believe she understood the full proposal.""
David studied the document.
"Who prepared this?""
Michael pointed to the bottom.
"Daniel Whitmore.""
Dad stood.
"I'm going to find Vanessa.""
David immediately stopped him.
"No. You are not going anywhere near her.""
"She used my name!""
"And that's exactly why you need to let investigators handle this.""
Dad sat down again.
For several seconds, he stared at the floor.
Then he looked at me.
"Emily, I need you to know something.""
I waited.
"Whatever happens with the investigation, I will make sure you receive everything your mother intended.""
I swallowed.
"Why should I believe you?""
His face crumpled.
I hadn't meant to hurt him.
But I couldn't pretend nothing had happened.
He had allowed Vanessa into our financial affairs.
He had signed documents without fully understanding them.
He had accepted money from Daniel.
And every time I had asked questions, he'd told me not to worry.
"I know," he whispered.
"I haven't earned your trust.""
David's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and then asked the caller to repeat the information.
His expression changed.
"Are you certain?""
He ended the call.
"The investigators have located Vanessa.""
"Where?"" Michael asked.
"At a private bank in Buckhead.""
David turned toward me.
"She attempted to withdraw funds from an account connected to one of the offshore companies.""
Dad stood again.
"How much?""
"Approximately $420,000.""
I felt dizzy.
"Can they stop her?""
"The bank has flagged the transaction. Investigators are responding.""
Then David received another message.
He read it silently.
His expression became even more serious.
"There's a complication.""
"What?"" I asked.
"Vanessa claims she has authorization to access the remaining funds.""
"From whom?""
David looked at Dad.
"She says Richard gave her permission.""
Dad shook his head violently.
"That's a lie!""
"She has submitted a document bearing your signature.""
David placed a copy on the table.
I recognized the signature immediately.
It looked like Dad's.
But the date was from six months earlier, and the document authorized Vanessa to manage several accounts connected to the estate.
Dad stared.
"I never signed this.""
David examined the page.
"Then we need to establish whether the signature is genuine.""
I leaned forward.
At the bottom of the document was a witness signature.
Daniel Whitmore.
But beside it was another name.
Vanessa had signed as the authorized agent.
And beneath her signature was a handwritten note.
If Richard refuses to cooperate, proceed without him.
I looked at my father.
He looked terrified.
May you like
For the first time, I realized Vanessa might have been planning to leave him holding the blame for everything.
And she had already prepared the paperwork to make it look convincing.
