Chapter 14: The Woman Who Tried to Blame Everyone Else

The investigators arrived at our house that evening.

They requested copies of Dad's bank statements, the disputed authorization, and every document relating to the Carter Family Trust.

Dad cooperated without hesitation.

He provided his phone, emails, and financial records.

I watched from the living room as he answered question after question.

"Did you authorize monthly payments from Whitmore Financial?""

"No. I believed they were compensation for consulting work.""

"Did you know those accounts were connected to Elizabeth Carter's estate?""

"No.""

"Did you authorize Vanessa to access Emily's inheritance?""

"I gave her access to household banking, not Emily's trust.""

The investigator wrote something down.

"Did you sign this document?""

Dad looked at the disputed authorization.

"No. I have never seen this document before today.""

The investigator nodded.

"We'll arrange a forensic signature examination.""

Meanwhile, David was working with the bank to freeze the remaining accounts.

At around eight that evening, my phone rang.

The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

Vanessa's voice came through.

"Emily.""

I immediately put the phone on speaker.

"How did you get this number?""

"That doesn't matter. I need you to listen.""

David looked up from his laptop.

I nodded toward him.

He moved closer.

Vanessa continued.

"Your father is making a terrible mistake.""

I almost laughed.

"What mistake?""

"Allowing those people to destroy this family.""

"You stole my mother's money.""

"I borrowed it!""

"That's what you keep saying.""

Her voice became sharper.

"Your mother left more money than you could ever spend. You have no idea how much pressure I was under.""

I stared at the phone.

"What pressure?""

"Keeping this household running. Taking care of Kayla. Taking care of you!""

"You bought yourself jewelry with my inheritance.""

"I worked hard too!""

David quietly signaled for me to keep her talking.

I took a breath.

"Why did you use my Social Security number?""

Vanessa went silent.

Then she said:

"Because I knew you wouldn't understand.""

"Understand what?""

"Your mother wanted you to have everything. She never cared what happened to anyone else.""

I felt my hands tighten.

"That's not true.""

"You think your mother was perfect? She left behind millions of dollars while the rest of us struggled.""

"You had a house, a husband, and a comfortable life.""

"Your father was never as wealthy as you think!""

I looked toward Dad.

He had stopped answering questions.

He was listening.

Vanessa continued.

"Do you know why I opened those accounts? Because Daniel told me the money could be invested. He promised we'd replace it before you turned eighteen.""

"So you knew it wasn't yours.""

"I was going to make everything right!""

"Then why did you try to transfer another $420,000 today?""

Her breathing became uneven.

"Because I needed to protect myself.""

"From what?""

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"Daniel was planning to leave me with all the blame.""

David looked up sharply.

I continued.

"Did Daniel forge the documents?""

Vanessa began crying.

"Daniel prepared them. He told me where to sign.""

"And the money?""

"He controlled the investment accounts. I only handled the transfers he instructed me to make.""

David wrote something down.

"Did you know about the offshore company?""

"Yes.""

"Who owned it?""

She hesitated.

Then she said:

"Daniel.""

I looked at David.

He nodded.

Vanessa continued.

"Emily, I can give you everything. Just tell your father to stop cooperating with the police.""

I felt cold.

"You're asking me to protect you?""

"I'm asking you to protect your family.""

I stared at the phone.

"You destroyed my family.""

Then I ended the call.

David immediately secured the recording and passed it to the investigator.

The following morning, Vanessa was taken in for questioning.

Daniel had already been formally detained pending further investigation into the financial transactions and forged documents.

But the most important discovery came from the forensic examination of the disputed authorization.

Dad's signature had been copied from an old document.

The examiner found identical pressure patterns and microscopic irregularities.

It was not an original signature.

Someone had digitally reproduced it.

David explained that this evidence significantly strengthened the case.

Then the bank delivered another surprise.

The offshore company had attempted to transfer $420,000 to an account in Europe.

The transaction had been stopped before completion.

Investigators also located another $310,000 in domestic investment accounts.

Those funds were frozen.

For the first time, there was a realistic possibility of recovering a substantial portion of my mother's money.

But I wasn't celebrating.

I was sitting in my mother's room, reading the letters she'd written for my eighteenth birthday.

Dad knocked.

"Can I come in?""

I nodded.

He sat beside me.

"Vanessa has been charged with several financial offenses.""

I looked at him.

"What happens to the house?""

"David says the down payment can be traced to your mother's trust. There will be legal proceedings to determine the appropriate recovery.""

"And the Mercedes?""

"Kayla may have to surrender it if investigators establish that it was purchased with stolen funds.""

I looked down.

"She'll hate me.""

Dad shook his head.

"You didn't steal anything from her.""

He paused.

"Emily, I also want to tell you that I'm cooperating fully. The investigators know about every payment I received. I've agreed to return the money if it's determined to belong to the estate.""

I nodded.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

"I found this in the safe.""

My mother's handwriting was across the front.

For Richard, if you ever need to remember what matters.

Dad opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph of the three of us.

I was six years old, sitting on my mother's shoulders.

Dad was standing beside us, laughing.

On the back, she'd written:

Richard, please remember that Emily is the most important thing we built together. Protect her, even when protecting her means admitting you're wrong.

Dad began crying.

"I failed her.""

I looked at him.

"You made mistakes.""

He nodded.

"But you can still choose what happens next.""

He placed the photograph beside me.

Then he told me something that changed how I understood the last three years.

"The money Daniel paid me? I never spent it. I put every deposit into a separate savings account because I thought it was compensation I might need to declare for taxes.""

I looked up.

"How much is there?""

"All $180,000.""

I stared at him.

For the first time, there was a real chance that some of the missing money could be returned immediately.

But before I could respond, David entered the room holding a new report.

"Emily, we have the preliminary recovery figures.""

I stood.

"How much?""

He placed the report on the dresser.

"Between the frozen investment accounts, the domestic transfers, the money held by your father, and the assets connected to the property purchases, we're currently tracking approximately $1.35 million.""

I covered my mouth.

"And the rest?""

David looked serious.

"Some funds may be permanently lost. But we're not finished investigating.""

He turned the page.

"There is also a new development involving the Savannah property.""

"What?""

"The property has generated rental income for seven years. Those payments were supposed to go into your mother's independent account.""

He paused.

"They were diverted too.""

I looked at him.

"How much?""

David gave me a number.

$168,000.

And every single payment had been collected by someone using a company registered under Vanessa's name.

I closed my eyes.

May you like

Even after all these years, they had continued taking from me.

But this time, there would be no more hiding.
