Chapter 5: My Mother's Last Recording

David called his office before leaving our house.

He instructed his assistant to locate every surviving document related to the trust amendment, including correspondence with Daniel Whitmore.

Then he turned toward Dad.

"Richard, I need you to understand something. We may be dealing with more than financial misconduct. If these signatures were forged, this could involve identity fraud, fraudulent transfers, and potential criminal conspiracy.""

Dad nodded.

"Whatever it takes. I want my daughter's money recovered.""

Vanessa scoffed.

"Recovered? You think there's $850,000 sitting in someone's bank account waiting for you?""

Dad stared at her.

"Where is it?""

She looked away.

David closed his briefcase.

"That's what the investigation will determine.""

Before leaving, he handed Dad his business card.

"Don't confront Daniel. Don't delete anything. And don't allow anyone to access Emily's personal documents.""

Then he looked at me.

"Emily, your mother's letter belongs to you. I'll return tomorrow with the original file.""

I nodded.

He left.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa walked toward the stairs.

Dad stopped her.

"Where are you going?""

"Upstairs.""

"Not until we finish this conversation.""

She turned around.

"Richard, I'm exhausted.""

"So is Emily. She's been working toward college while you were spending her inheritance.""

Vanessa's face twisted.

"Your daughter has always been the center of everything!""

Dad looked stunned.

"She's my daughter.""

"And what about Kayla? Do you think she doesn't deserve anything? Do you think I enjoyed watching Emily get everything while my daughter got nothing?""

I stared at her.

"Everything?""

I almost laughed.

"I worked at a grocery store every weekend. I bought my own clothes. I studied until two in the morning. What exactly did I get?""

Vanessa pointed at me.

"You got a father who worships you!""

Dad's voice became firm.

"Enough. You're going to explain every dollar.""

She turned and walked upstairs.

Her bedroom door slammed.

That evening, I went into my mother's old room.

Dad had kept most of her belongings untouched.

Her books still lined the shelves. A small ceramic bird sat beside the window. Her perfume bottle remained on the dresser.

I opened the bottom drawer.

Inside was a wooden box containing birthday cards she'd written before she died.

I found the one marked eighteen.

My fingers shook as I unfolded it.

My beautiful Emily,

By now, you should be old enough to understand that life doesn't always give us the time we expect. But I hope you never stop believing that you deserve wonderful things.

If you decide to become a doctor, I hope you become the kind who listens when people are afraid.

If you choose another path, I will be proud of you anyway.

And please, sweetheart, never allow anyone to make you feel guilty for receiving something I worked hard to give you.

I pressed the letter against my face.

For the first time that day, I cried without trying to stop.

A soft knock came from the doorway.

Dad entered.

He sat beside me.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""

I wiped my cheeks.

"You didn't know?""

He shook his head.

"I should have checked the accounts more carefully.""

"Mom trusted you.""

"I know.""

He looked at the photograph of her on the dresser.

"I promised her I'd protect you.""

I reached for his hand.

"Then help me find out what happened.""

He nodded.

"We will.""

The next morning, David returned with an update.

His office had located an old email from Daniel Whitmore.

It contained an attachment labeled:

ELIZABETH_FINAL_MEETING_AUDIO.

David placed his laptop on the dining table.

"Daniel's assistant confirmed that a copy was retained in an archived client file. We obtained it through the appropriate legal process.""

Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs.

When she saw the laptop, she stopped.

"What's that?""

David didn't look up.

"An audio recording.""

Her hand tightened around the railing.

"Of what?""

"Your last meeting with Elizabeth and Daniel.""

She descended slowly.

"That recording is private.""

David clicked the file.

A woman's voice filled the room.

My mother's voice.

"Daniel, I need you to promise me something.""

I stopped breathing.

Daniel answered.

"Anything, Elizabeth.""

"If I don't survive this illness, Emily's inheritance must remain protected.""

"Of course.""

"And Vanessa must never be given authority over the trust.""

Dad's head snapped toward his wife.

Vanessa went completely still.

My mother's voice continued.

"She has already asked about the money twice. She keeps saying Kayla deserves an equal share.""

Daniel responded.

"I understand.""

"I don't want my daughter growing up believing she has to pay for everyone else's happiness.""

There was a pause.

Then my mother said something that made my blood run cold.

"Daniel, if Vanessa ever comes to you with a document claiming I changed my will, don't sign it. I have not changed my instructions.""

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Dad slowly turned toward Vanessa.

"You knew.""

She shook her head.

"That recording is edited.""

David closed the laptop.

"The original file has been preserved. Any authenticity questions can be addressed by forensic examination.""

Vanessa backed away.

"You're all trying to destroy me.""

Dad stood.

"You were specifically warned not to touch that money.""

"I didn't steal anything!""

David calmly replied.

"Then explain the transfers.""

Vanessa looked at me.

For the first time, she didn't look angry.

She looked desperate.

"Emily, listen. Your mother was sick. She wasn't thinking clearly. Daniel and I were trying to make sure everyone was taken care of.""

I stood.

"My mother specifically said you shouldn't have access.""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"She hated me.""

I stared at her.

"Maybe she just knew you.""

Kayla suddenly appeared behind her mother.

"Mom, we need to talk.""

Vanessa turned.

"Not now.""

Kayla looked at the laptop.

Then at me.

"Emily, there's something I need to tell you.""

Vanessa grabbed her daughter's arm.

"Don't.""

Kayla pulled away.

"I can't keep lying.""

She looked directly at Dad.

"Mom told me the Mercedes wasn't the only thing she bought with Emily's money.""

Dad's face tightened.

"What else?""

Kayla swallowed.

Then she said:

"The house we're living in...""

May you like

She looked at Vanessa.

"Mom used Emily's inheritance to pay for the down payment.""
