Chapter 5: The Betrayal I Didn’t See Coming

The next morning, I arrived at my office before sunrise.

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Clara standing there.

Cold water dripping from her hair.

Her hand covering her stomach.

The people who were supposed to love her laughing.

But now there was another problem.

Someone connected to my company had accessed my private account.

And that meant this wasn’t just a family betrayal.

It was something bigger.

My assistant, Emily, was already there when I entered.

She looked surprised.

“Daniel? You’re early.””

I placed my laptop on the desk.

“Emily, I need to ask you something.””

Her smile disappeared.

“Okay.””

“Has anyone used my office computer recently?””

She hesitated.

Only for a moment.

But I noticed.

“Why?””

“Because someone accessed a private account using a company device.””

Her face changed.

“What account?””

I looked at her.

“My vacation account.””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know anything about that.””

I watched her carefully.

Emily had worked with me for four years.

She was organized.

Reliable.

The person I trusted with important details.

But trust was exactly what made betrayal hurt.

“I’m not accusing you,” I said.

“Then why ask me?””

“Because the access came from this office.””

She looked toward my computer.

Then away.

That small movement told me something.

“Emily.””

She sighed.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

She sat down slowly.

“Vanessa came here last week.””

I froze.

“She came here?””

Emily nodded.

“She said you asked her to pick up some documents.””

I stared at her.

“I never told her that.””

“I know that now.””

“What did she do?””

Emily looked uncomfortable.

“She asked if she could use your computer for a minute.””

My jaw tightened.

“And you let her?””

“She had your sister’s confidence. She acted like it was normal.””

Emily rubbed her hands together.

“I thought maybe you knew.””

“What did she access?””

“I don’t know.””

I turned the laptop around.

“This.””

I showed her the report.

Her face went pale.

“Oh my God.””

“Emily, did she use this computer?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

She looked at the timestamp.

“Two days ago.””

The same day Clara had been humiliated.

The same day I canceled the trip.

I leaned back.

Everything connected.

Vanessa wasn’t just angry.

She had planned this.

She believed the vacation belonged to her.

And when I took control back, she looked for another way.

I called Vanessa.

She answered after one ring.

“Are you calling to apologize?””

I almost smiled.

“No.””

“Then what?””

“You came to my office.””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

“Who told you?””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The admission.

“You accessed my company computer.””

“You weren’t supposed to know.””

That sentence made my blood run cold.

Not “I didn’t.””

Not “You’re misunderstanding.””

Just disappointment that she had been caught.

“Vanessa, what were you trying to do?””

“You ruined everything.””

“No. I protected my wife.””

“She ruined everything.””

I stood up.

“Don’t say her name.””

“She walked into that house and made everyone uncomfortable.””

“She was seven months pregnant.””

“She always makes everything about her.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“You threw water at her.””

“She was being dramatic.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Do you hear yourself?””

She was quiet.

Then her voice changed.

“You think you’re better than us now.””

“No.””

“You have money and suddenly you think you can control everyone.””

I looked around my office.

The place I built from nothing.

The place where I spent years working late.

“No, Vanessa.””

My voice lowered.

“I think I finally stopped letting everyone control me.””

She hung up.

I stared at the phone.

Then it rang again.

Not Vanessa.

My lawyer.

I answered.

“Daniel, we need to talk.””

“What happened?””

“I reviewed the access records you sent.””

“And?””

There was a pause.

A serious one.

“Someone didn’t just access your vacation account.””

I stood still.

“What do you mean?””

“They accessed financial information connected to your business.””

My stomach dropped.

“Are you saying someone stole money?””

“No.””

A pause.

“They tried to transfer ownership.””

I felt the room spin.

“Ownership of what?””

May you like

My lawyer’s voice became quieter.

“Your company shares.””
