Chapter 4: The Person Behind The Access
I stared at the security report until the words blurred together.
The name beneath Vanessa’s was not a stranger.
It was someone who had sat across from me at that dinner table.
Someone who watched Clara get humiliated and said nothing.
My father.
Richard Carter.
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
I had expected Vanessa to act selfishly.
That was who she had become.
But my father?
The man who spent years teaching me that honesty mattered?
The man who always said, “Family takes care of family”?
Apparently, those words only applied when he was the one receiving the benefit.
I walked back into the living room.
My father looked at me.
“What now?””
I held up my phone.
“Explain this.””
His face changed when he saw the report.
Not confusion.
Not shock.
Recognition.
Vanessa looked between us.
“What is it?””
I didn’t answer her.
I looked directly at my father.
“You accessed the account.””
He cleared his throat.
“I was just helping.””
I almost laughed.
“Helping?””
“Yes.””
He stood straighter.
“You were making an emotional decision. I knew you’d regret canceling the trip.””
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
The confidence in his voice made my stomach turn.
“How did you know?””
He looked away.
That was enough.
I already knew.
“You gave Vanessa my login information.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t speak to your father like that.””
I turned toward her.
“Did you know?””
Silence.
That was her answer.
I felt something inside me break.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just a quiet realization.
The family I had spent years trying to protect had never been protecting me.
My father sat down.
“Listen to me. We were counting on this vacation.””
I stared at him.
“Counting on it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked annoyed.
“Because you offered it.””
“No. I offered a gift.””
“A gift you’re taking back.””
I shook my head.
“No. A gift you destroyed.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“Daniel, seriously? You’re acting like Clara was attacked.””
I turned toward her.
“She was.””
“It was water.””
“It was thrown at her stomach.””
“She’s fine.””
I stepped closer.
“That’s all you care about? That she’s physically okay?””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“She’s too sensitive.””
Those words stayed in the air.
My father looked uncomfortable.
But not because he disagreed.
Because he knew I was done.
I walked toward the door.
Behind me, my mother called my name.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
For a moment, I hoped she would say something different.
Something that sounded like regret.
Something that sounded like love.
Instead, she said:
“Your father and Vanessa have been looking forward to this for months.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Not Clara.
Not the baby.
Not the way they treated us.
The vacation.
I turned around.
“So have I.””
They looked surprised.
“I looked forward to giving my family something beautiful.””
My voice became quieter.
“And then I watched my family hurt my wife.””
Nobody answered.
I left.
On the drive home, I kept thinking about one thing.
The report said there was another unauthorized user.
My father had accessed the account.
But someone else had approved the changes.
Someone else had made the upgrade request.
When I got home, Clara was sitting on the couch.
She immediately looked at my face.
“What happened?””
I sat beside her.
“My father knew.””
Her expression fell.
“Knew what?””
“He helped Vanessa access the account.””
She looked down.
For a long time, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I frowned.
“Why are you sorry?””
“Because my presence caused all this.””
I turned toward her.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I took her hand.
“You didn’t cause anything.””
She looked at me.
“They were already like this.””
That sentence hurt because it was true.
Later that night, while Clara slept, I opened the security report again.
There was one section I hadn’t read.
The original access request.
The timestamp.
The device information.
And the location.
My heart started beating faster.
Because the access didn’t happen from my parents’ house.
It didn’t happen from Vanessa’s home.
It happened from somewhere else.
Somewhere I knew.
I zoomed in.
Then I saw the address.
The person who accessed my account wasn’t just connected to my family.
May you like
They were connected to my business.
And they had used a company device.
