Chapter 3: The Name On The Reservation

I read the email three times.

Maybe my eyes were wrong.

Maybe exhaustion was making me see something that wasn’t there.

But the name didn’t change.

Vanessa Carter.

My sister.

She had used the vacation account.

My vacation account.

I called the concierge immediately.

The same woman answered.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes. I need information about the unauthorized charge.””

“One moment.””

I heard keyboard clicks.

Then silence.

“Sir, the charge appears to be connected to an account access request made yesterday.””

“Who approved it?””

“That is what we are investigating.””

“Tell me everything.””

The woman hesitated.

“Someone contacted us claiming to be your assistant.””

My stomach tightened.

“My assistant?””

“Yes. They requested changes to passenger details and added additional services.””

I looked at the email again.

Vanessa.

She wasn’t just using the vacation.

She was trying to control it.

“Was anything changed?””

“Yes.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“The yacht reservation was upgraded.””

I almost laughed.

Of course.

She wasn’t worried about losing the trip.

She was trying to make it bigger.

More expensive.

More impressive.

“How much was the upgrade?””

The woman told me.

I felt sick.

Vanessa had added thousands of dollars in luxury services.

Things she never paid for.

Things she assumed would always be there.

“Cancel the upgrades.””

“Already done.””

“And make sure nobody can access the account.””

“Of course.””

After the call ended, I sat on the edge of the bed.

Clara walked in slowly.

She was holding a glass of water.

“You look upset.””

I turned the laptop toward her.

She read the email.

Her expression changed.

“She did this?””

I nodded.

“Why?””

That question stayed with me.

Why?

Why would someone treat another human being like that?

Especially family.

Especially someone who had spent months preparing a gift.

The next morning, I went to my parents’ house.

Not because I wanted to fight.

Because I wanted answers.

My father opened the door.

He looked angry.

“You finally decided to show up.””

I stepped inside.

“Where’s Vanessa?””

He frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I know she accessed my vacation account.””

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You’re accusing your sister?””

“I’m asking a question.””

My mother came into the room.

“Daniel, this is ridiculous.””

“No. What’s ridiculous is that you both care more about a vacation than your son’s pregnant wife.””

My father crossed his arms.

“You’re punishing us.””

“No.””

I looked at them.

“I’m protecting my family.””

My mother shook her head.

“You’ve become cold.””

I almost smiled.

Cold.

That was interesting coming from people who laughed while Clara stood there soaked and shaking.

Then Vanessa walked in.

She stopped when she saw me.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“Why did you access my account?””

Her face immediately became defensive.

“I didn’t.””

The answer came too quickly.

I noticed.

“You didn’t?””

“No.””

“Then why does the concierge have your name?””

She looked at my parents.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

My father noticed too.

“Vanessa?””

She sighed.

“Fine.””

My chest tightened.

She actually admitted it.

“I only made a few changes.””

“A few?””

“You canceled it anyway.””

“That doesn’t give you permission to spend money you didn’t earn.””

Her expression hardened.

“You were always going to give it to us.””

The sentence hit harder than the ice water.

Always going to give it to us.

Not “Thank you.””

Not “We appreciate you.””

Just entitlement.

I stepped closer.

“I paid for that vacation because I loved you.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“And now you’re using it against us.””

“No.””

I looked around the room.

“At least now you know what it feels like when someone takes something away from you without caring how you feel.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed almost immediately.

“What do you mean the hotel canceled?””

I froze.

The room went silent.

My father slowly lowered the phone.

“They canceled everything.””

Vanessa stared at me.

“They can’t do that.””

I looked at her.

“They can.””

She took a step forward.

“You ruined our vacation.””

I shook my head.

“No, Vanessa.””

I picked up my jacket.

“You ruined it the moment you threw that water.””

I walked toward the door.

But before I reached it, my phone buzzed.

Another email.

Another message from the concierge.

This time, there was an attachment.

A security report.

And the first line made my blood run cold.

*Additional unauthorized user detected.*

I opened the file.

And the person listed beneath Vanessa’s name was someone I never expected.
