Chapter 10: The Partner Who Was Never My Friend

I read the contract again.

Then again.

The words stayed the same.

I wanted them to change.

I wanted my eyes to be wrong.

But they weren’t.

The name on the document belonged to someone I had trusted for years.

Someone who had stood beside me during the hardest days of building my company.

Someone who knew every weakness.

Every account.

Every password.

Every dream.

Ethan Brooks.

My business partner.

My friend.

I looked at my father.

“How long have you known?””

He looked down.

“Not long.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He sighed.

“About six months.””

Six months.

Six months of my father knowing someone was making plans behind my back.

Six months of everyone acting normal.

Six months while I invited Ethan into my home.

While I introduced him to Clara.

While I trusted him around my family.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

My father looked ashamed.

“Because I thought I could handle it.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You thought you could handle someone stealing my company?””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I thought I could fix it.””

I stared at him.

That was the problem with my family.

Everyone wanted to fix things without telling me the truth.

They made decisions for me.

They controlled information.

They decided what I deserved to know.

And every time, it ended with me getting hurt.

I took the document.

“I need everything you have.””

My father nodded.

“I’ll give it to you.””

I turned away.

“Dad.””

He looked up.

For a second, neither of us spoke.

Then I said:

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

His face fell.

“I understand.””

“But I need the truth.””

He nodded.

“You’ll get it.””

That night, I sat across from Clara at our kitchen table.

She listened quietly as I explained everything.

When I finished, she didn’t immediately speak.

She just reached across and held my hand.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“Why does everyone keep saying that to me?””

“Because you’ve been carrying everyone else for a long time.””

I looked down.

“I thought I was helping.””

“You were.””

She squeezed my fingers.

“But some people confuse kindness with permission.””

That sentence stayed with me.

The next morning, I called Ethan.

I didn’t accuse him.

I didn’t warn him.

I simply asked him to meet.

He arrived at my office twenty minutes later.

Same confident smile.

Same expensive suit.

Same handshake.

“Daniel. Everything okay?””

I studied him.

How many times had I looked at this person and missed the truth?

“Sit down.””

He noticed my tone.

The smile disappeared slightly.

“What happened?””

I placed the contract on the desk.

His expression changed.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

“What is this?””

“You tell me.””

He picked it up.

Read the page.

Then slowly placed it down.

“I can explain.””

I leaned back.

“I’m listening.””

He took a breath.

“Daniel, your company was unstable when we started.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

He looked frustrated.

“You were talented, but you were reckless.””

I felt anger rise.

“I built this.””

“We built this.””

“No.””

The room went silent.

“You helped.””

His jaw tightened.

That was the first time I saw the real Ethan.

Not my friend.

Not my partner.

Someone who believed he deserved more.

“I protected the company.””

“You created a legal document that would let you take control.””

“Only if something happened to you.””

“Something like what?””

He didn’t answer.

I leaned forward.

“Say it.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Like if you became incapable of running it.””

I felt sick.

“You planned for me to fail.””

“No.””

“You planned to benefit from it.””

He looked away.

That was his answer.

I stood.

“You knew about the vacation account.””

His head turned.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

I watched him carefully.

He was good.

Very good.

But I had spent enough time around liars.

“You knew Vanessa accessed my account.””

Silence.

Then:

“Vanessa told me.””

My stomach tightened.

“So you did know.””

“I didn’t tell her to do anything.””

“But you knew.””

He looked annoyed.

“Daniel, your family is complicated.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone kept saying that.

A phrase people used when they wanted to avoid responsibility.

“You’re all the same.””

His expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

“It means everyone around me thinks they’re protecting me while secretly taking from me.””

He stood.

“Be careful.””

The warning was subtle.

But I heard it.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

He grabbed his coat.

“It’s advice.””

After he left, I called my lawyer.

“Start preparing everything.””

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

“Against Ethan?””

I looked through the glass wall of my office.

At the company I built.

The company people were trying to take.

“Yes.””

Before the call ended, my lawyer said:

“Daniel, there’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“We found the original source of the ownership documents.””

I waited.

“Someone inside your family sent them to Ethan.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“Your mother.””
