Chapter 14: The Truth Comes To Court
The person in the file was Michael Reed.
My former business advisor.
Seven years ago, Michael had helped me create the foundation of my company.
He knew the first contracts.
The first investors.
The first mistakes.
Then, suddenly, he disappeared.
He told everyone he was moving away.
I never questioned it.
I was too busy trying to survive.
Now my lawyer was telling me Michael had information that could destroy Ethan’s entire plan.
“How do we find him?””
My lawyer looked serious.
“We already did.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“He contacted us yesterday.””
I felt confused.
“Why?””
“Because he saw what Ethan was doing.””
The meeting happened that afternoon.
Michael looked older.
Tired.
But his eyes were the same.
When he saw me, he looked ashamed.
“Daniel.””
I didn’t shake his hand.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
“I suspected.””
“About Ethan?””
“Yes.””
“About my father?””
His expression changed.
“I didn’t know about your father.””
I studied him.
“Then tell me everything.””
Michael sat down.
“When you started the company, Ethan wasn’t your friend.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was impressed by you.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
Michael looked down.
“He was jealous.””
I wasn’t surprised.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought I could manage him.””
Another person.
Another excuse.
I almost laughed.
“Everyone thinks they can manage things.””
Michael accepted that.
“I made a mistake.””
He opened his laptop.
“I found these years ago.””
Documents appeared on the screen.
Emails.
Financial records.
Messages.
Ethan’s name appeared repeatedly.
“He was planning control from the beginning.””
I stared.
“How?””
“He created loyalty around you.””
“What does that mean?””
“He knew you trusted people who needed help.””
My jaw tightened.
“He used my kindness.””
“Yes.””
Michael nodded.
“He identified everyone who felt they deserved something from you.””
My family.
Vanessa.
My parents.
Everyone.
“And my father?””
Michael looked uncomfortable.
“Your father wasn’t involved at first.””
“What changed?””
“He became afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you would leave the family behind.””
I shook my head.
“I was never leaving.””
“I know.””
Michael looked at me.
“But fear makes people believe things that aren’t true.””
Two days later, we were in court.
Ethan sat across from me.
Confident.
Calm.
Like he had already won.
My father sat behind him.
I couldn’t look at him.
The hearing began.
Ethan’s lawyer argued that I was unstable.
That recent family conflict affected my judgment.
That temporary control was necessary.
Then my lawyer stood.
And everything changed.
He presented the access records.
The company device.
The unauthorized documents.
The payments to Vanessa.
The recording.
Ethan’s confidence slowly disappeared.
The judge listened carefully.
Then asked:
“Mr. Brooks, can you explain why these documents were created?””
Ethan remained silent.
His lawyer tried to answer.
But the judge stopped him.
“No. I asked Mr. Brooks.””
The room was quiet.
Finally, Ethan spoke.
“Daniel misunderstood.””
I almost smiled.
That was all he had.
A misunderstanding.
My lawyer played the recording.
The courtroom heard his voice.
*“Once Daniel is gone, everything belongs to us.””*
Then my father’s voice.
*“He’ll never understand until it’s too late.””*
My father lowered his head.
Ethan looked angry.
Not guilty.
Angry.
The judge listened again.
Then looked at Ethan.
“Do you deny this conversation occurred?””
Ethan said nothing.
The hearing lasted hours.
By the end, the judge denied Ethan’s request for control.
The company remained mine.
But there was one thing I still needed.
The truth from my father.
After court, I found him outside.
He looked broken.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
“I need to know why.””
He looked away.
“I was afraid.””
“Again.””
He nodded.
“I saw you building a life without us.””
I stared.
“I was building a life for us.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know that now.””
I wanted to forgive him.
Part of me did.
But forgiveness didn’t erase damage.
“You almost lost me.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Then he said something unexpected.
“Your mother wants to talk to you.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He handed me an envelope.
“Because she found something.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not from my mother.
Not from Ethan.
From someone else.
The handwriting was familiar.

And the first sentence made my blood run cold.
*Daniel, if you’re reading this, it means I failed to protect you.*
