Chapter 12: The Family Meeting That Changed Everything
I arrived at my parents’ house expecting a fight.
I expected Vanessa to manipulate me.
I expected another excuse.
Instead, I found her sitting alone at the kitchen table.
No anger.
No attitude.
Just exhaustion.
She looked different.
Older.
“Where are Mom and Dad?””
“Not here.””
“Why did you call me?””
She looked at the chair across from her.
“Sit down.””
I didn’t move.
“Talk.””
She swallowed.
“I made a mistake.””
The words surprised me.
Because I had waited weeks to hear them.
But now that they came, they didn’t feel satisfying.
They felt late.
“What mistake?””
She looked down.
“Everything.””
I stayed quiet.
She continued.
“Ethan found me months ago.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he knew I was angry.””
“At me?””
She nodded.
“He knew I felt like you had everything.””
I shook my head.
“So he used that.””
“Yes.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
“He told me you didn’t care about us anymore.””
I laughed quietly.
“I paid for your vacation.””
“I know.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know that now.””
I sat down slowly.
“What did he promise you?””
She looked ashamed.
“A percentage.””
“Of my company?””
“Yes.””
The room was silent.
“Vanessa.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I know how bad it sounds.””
“It sounds like betrayal.””
She nodded.
“It was.””
For once, she didn’t defend herself.
That made it harder.
Because anger was easier when someone refused to admit what they did.
“Why the dinner?””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“The ice water.””
Her face changed.
“I didn’t plan that.””
“You just did it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She covered her face.
“I was angry.””
“At my wife?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
And finally, she said the truth.
“Because everyone loved her.””
I stared.
“What?””
“She came into the family and everyone changed.””
“That’s not true.””
“It felt true.””
Her voice became smaller.
“She was kind. She was patient. She was everything people wanted me to be.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because for the first time, Vanessa wasn’t blaming me.
She was admitting something ugly.
Jealousy.
“I hated that I was jealous.””
I looked away.
“And Ethan knew.””
“Yes.””
She wiped her eyes.
“He knew exactly what to say.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“So he planned everything.””
She nodded.
“But there’s more.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She reached into her bag.
Then placed a small recording device on the table.
“What is that?””
“Proof.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Of what?””
She looked toward the doorway.
“Ethan wasn’t planning to take your company.””
I frowned.
“Then what?””
She pressed play.
A voice filled the kitchen.
Ethan.
But the words weren’t about business.
They weren’t about money.
They were about something much worse.
*“Once Daniel is gone, everything belongs to us.””*
I froze.
My eyes moved to Vanessa.
“What does he mean?””
She looked terrified.
“Daniel…”
The recording continued.
And then I heard another voice.
A voice I recognized instantly.
My blood turned cold.
May you like
Because the second person speaking wasn’t Ethan.
It was someone who had been standing beside me my entire life.
