Chapter 13: The Voice Behind The Plan
The recording stopped.
But the silence afterward felt louder than anything I had heard before.
I stared at the device on the kitchen table.
My mind refused to accept what my ears had just heard.
Ethan’s voice was familiar.
That didn’t surprise me.
But the second voice…
That voice was impossible.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Play it again.””
She hesitated.
“Daniel…”
“Play it.””
Her fingers shook as she pressed the button.
The recording started.
Static.
Then Ethan’s voice.
*“Once Daniel is gone, everything belongs to us.””*
A pause.
Then another voice.
Older.
Calmer.
A voice I had heard my entire life.
My father.
*“He’ll never understand until it’s too late.””*
I felt like the room moved.
My father.
Again.
After everything.
I stood up.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“There has to be another explanation.””
She looked down.
“I wanted there to be.””
I walked away from the table.
My father.
The man who apologized.
The man who admitted mistakes.
The man who claimed he was scared.
Was he acting?
Had every conversation been another performance?
I turned back.
“When did you get this?””
“Two days ago.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Her eyes filled with shame.
“Because I was scared.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone is scared.””
She looked hurt.
But she didn’t argue.
“I thought Ethan was only trying to hurt you financially.””
“And now?””
“Now I think he was planning something bigger.””
I picked up the device.
“Where did you record this?””
She looked away.
“I followed Ethan.””
“Why?””
“Because after everything happened, I realized he never cared about me.””
That surprised me.
She continued.
“He kept telling me I deserved more. That you owed me.””
She swallowed.
“But every conversation came back to one thing.””
“What?””
“You.””
I felt cold.
“What about me?””
“He wasn’t angry at you because you had money.””
She looked at me.
“He was angry because you had something he couldn’t control.””
I thought about Ethan.
The contract.
The hidden ownership rights.
The patience.
The planning.
“How long?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
My phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
My lawyer.
I answered immediately.
“Daniel.””
His voice sounded urgent.
“We have a problem.””
“What happened?””
“Ethan filed an emergency motion.””
My stomach tightened.
“For what?””
“Control of company operations.””
I froze.
“On what grounds?””
“He claims you’re experiencing emotional instability after the family conflict.””
I couldn’t believe it.
“He’s saying I’m unstable?””
“Yes.””
The recording suddenly felt heavier in my hand.
“He’s trying to remove me.””
“Temporarily.””
“How quickly?””
A pause.
“Daniel, if the judge approves it, he could have control within forty-eight hours.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She understood immediately.
“He’s moving now.””
I nodded.
“He knows we know.””
I ended the call.
For years, I believed success protected me.
I thought money gave me security.
But I was wrong.
The people closest to me knew exactly where to hurt me.
When I got home, Clara was waiting.
One look at my face told her something was wrong.
“What happened?””
I sat beside her.
“I found out who was behind everything.””
She waited.
I didn’t know how to say it.
Finally:
“Ethan.””
Her expression changed.
“And?””
I looked away.
“My father.””
She covered her mouth.
“Daniel…”
“I know.””
“No.””
She reached for my hand.
“You don’t have to pretend this doesn’t hurt.””
I looked at her.
And for the first time in weeks, I allowed myself to admit it.
It hurt.
Not because they wanted my money.
Not because they wanted my company.
Because they were people I loved.
And they had chosen to betray me.
The next morning, I met with my lawyer.
We prepared everything.
Evidence.
Documents.
Security records.
The recording.
But there was one problem.
The recording alone wasn’t enough.
“We need to prove the context,” my lawyer said.
“What context?””
“That your father and Ethan were working together.””
I looked at the files.
Then I remembered something.
The vacation account.
The unauthorized access.
The company device.
The documents.
Everything connected.
Except one piece.
Who started it?
My lawyer looked at me.
“Daniel, there’s one person who might know.””
“Who?””
He placed a file on the table.
A name.
A person who had worked with Ethan before.
Someone who disappeared right before my company began growing.
I opened the file.
And my heart stopped.
May you like
Because the person who could expose Ethan wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone I thought had left my life forever.
