Chapter 9: The Choice Ethan Finally Made
Diane didn’t answer.
And that silence told me everything.
Ethan stared at her.
“What did you tell Lily?””
She looked annoyed.
“She misunderstood.””
“No.””
His voice was different.
Stronger.
“She said you told her I might leave because of her.””
Diane crossed her arms.
“She’s emotional.””
“She’s seven.””
“And children misunderstand things.””
I watched Ethan.
Waiting.
Because this was the moment.
Not the papers.
Not the accusations.
Not the lies about my past.
This was the moment he had to decide whether he was a father first.
Ethan walked toward Diane.
“Did you say that to her?””
Diane looked away.
“Ethan.””
“Answer me.””
The room went silent.
Finally, she said,
“I was trying to make her understand consequences.””
My stomach turned.
“Consequences?””
I stepped forward.
“She touched frosting.””
Diane looked at me.
“She needs boundaries.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She needs adults who make her feel safe.””
Lily held onto my hand.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“I can’t believe you said that.””
Diane’s expression changed.
“You’re taking her side?””
He stared at her.
“She’s my daughter.””
“And I’m your mother.””
“Yes.””
He nodded slowly.
“You are.””
For a second, Diane looked relieved.
Then he continued.
“But that doesn’t mean you get to hurt people.””
Her face fell.
“I have done everything for you.””
“I know.””
“Then how can you stand there and defend her?””
Ethan looked at me.
Then at Lily.
“Because I should have done it hours ago.””
Those words surprised everyone.
Especially me.
Diane stepped back.
“You’re blaming me?””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I’m blaming myself too.””
I saw tears forming in his eyes.
“I let you convince me that protecting my family meant controlling my wife.””
Diane’s mouth opened.
“But—”
“No.””
He stopped her.
“I listened to you describe Claire as a problem.””
His voice cracked.
“While you were the one creating problems.””
The room was completely silent.
I didn’t feel victorious.
I didn’t feel happy.
I just felt tired.
Because this wasn’t a battle I wanted to win.
It was a family I wanted to save.
Diane looked at me.
“This isn’t over.””
I didn’t answer.
She walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“You’ll regret this.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Mom.””
She turned.
“You really think Claire is the only one who can destroy this family?””
Then she left.
The door slammed.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Lily whispered,
“Is Grandma mad at me?””
I immediately knelt beside her.
“No.””
“She was mad because of my cake.””
I held her face gently.
“Sweetheart, none of this was because of cake.””
“Then why?””
I looked at Ethan.
He looked away.
Because he knew.
Adults had made a child feel responsible for something she never caused.
“You did nothing wrong,” I said.
Lily nodded.
But I knew children remembered more than adults realized.
They remembered voices.
Faces.
The moments when they needed protection.
Later that night, after Lily finally slept, Ethan and I sat at the kitchen table.
The same table where Diane had thrown those papers.
The same place where our marriage almost ended.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For believing the wrong person.””
I didn’t answer.
Because an apology didn’t erase everything.
“I should have protected her.””
“Yes.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I should have protected you too.””
I looked away.
“Ethan, I need time.””
“I know.””
“I don’t know if I can just forget tonight.””
“You shouldn’t.””
He reached for the documents.
“I’m going to fix this.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
“I’m contacting a lawyer tomorrow.””
My heart tightened.
“A divorce lawyer?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“A family lawyer.””
He pushed the custody papers away.
“I want to understand exactly what my mother did.””
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
I watched him answer.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then he stood.
“What do you mean she left something behind?””
My body went tense.
“Who is this?””
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“Claire…”
“What?””
His expression was pale.
“The police found a box outside Diane’s house.””
I stood.
“What was inside?””
He swallowed.
Then said,
“Photos of Lily.””
I froze.
“What kind of photos?””
Ethan looked at the phone.
May you like
And whispered,
“Photos taken before she was born.””
