Chapter 14: The Final Trap Diane Prepared

We found Diane two hours later.

Not because she wanted to talk.

Because she wanted us to come.

She was sitting in her living room when we arrived.

A cup of tea sat untouched on the table.

A folder rested beside it.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

“I knew you would come.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Where is the missing page?””

Diane smiled.

“So now you believe me?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I believe you have been hiding things.””

Her smile faded slightly.

Good.

For the first time, she didn’t have control of the conversation.

“Ethan, you don’t understand.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I finally understand.””

Diane looked at him.

“You’re my son.””

“And I’m also a father.””

The words hit her.

I saw it.

A crack.

Small.

But real.

Diane stood.

“You think Claire is honest?””

“I think she was hurt.””

“And I think she manipulated you.””

“No.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You manipulated me.””

Silence.

Then Diane laughed.

A quiet, bitter laugh.

“After everything I did for you.””

I stepped forward.

“What did you do?””

She looked at me.

“You really want to know?””

“Yes.””

Her expression hardened.

“I protected him from making the biggest mistake of his life.””

“By destroying his marriage?””

“By exposing the truth.””

I pointed toward the folder.

“Give us the page.””

Diane touched it.

“You know what happens if you take this?””

“Yes.””

“You lose your perfect story.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I lose a lie.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Diane opened the folder.

Inside was the missing page.

She held it up.

“One question.””

Ethan looked at her.

“What?””

“After everything she hid from you, you still choose her?””

He looked at me.

Then at Lily’s picture on his phone.

Then back at his mother.

“I choose my daughter.””

Diane’s expression changed.

Because that was the one thing she couldn’t control.

She slowly handed him the paper.

He read it.

His hands shook.

“What does it say?””

He didn’t answer.

I took the page.

And read.

It was a statement from my ex-husband.

A confession.

He admitted he had lied about Lily’s parentage.

He admitted he manipulated records.

He admitted he used my fear against me.

And at the bottom was the sentence that made everything clear.

*“Claire Morgan was unaware of these changes and believed the information provided to her by her husband.””*

I looked up.

“He knew.””

Ethan stared at the page.

“My mother knew.””

Diane looked away.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You knew I wasn’t lying.””

She didn’t answer.

“You knew.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I suspected.””

I felt anger rise.

“You suspected?””

She looked at me.

“And I wanted to know how far you would go to hide it.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You destroyed my family to test me?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I was protecting Ethan.””

“No.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Diane looked at him.

“I raised you.””

“And I appreciate that.””

His voice broke.

“But you don’t own me.””

Those words finally broke her.

The woman who had controlled every conversation.

Every decision.

Every fear.

She looked suddenly old.

Alone.

“I just didn’t want to lose you.””

Ethan’s expression softened.

But he didn’t move.

“You lost me when you hurt Lily.””

The room became quiet.

Then Diane whispered,

“I’m sorry.””

It was the first sincere thing she had said all night.

But some damage could not disappear because of one apology.

I took Ethan’s hand.

Not because everything was fixed.

Because we were finally standing on the same side.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

“Hello?””

His voice was serious.

“Claire, we need to talk.””

“What happened?””

A pause.

“We found something else connected to your ex-husband.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“He wasn’t working alone.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What do you mean?””

The detective lowered his voice.

“We found evidence someone helped him alter the records.””

I felt cold.

“Who?””

A long silence.

May you like

Then he said:

“Someone who had access to the hospital.””
