Chapter 5: The Truth I Never Told Ethan
The room felt smaller.
Like the walls had moved closer while I was reading those papers.
I picked up the police report again.
My eyes scanned the words.
Victim statement.
Pressure from spouse.
Withdrawn.
Three words that could change everything if someone didn’t know the story behind them.
And Diane knew that.
She was counting on it.
“Say something,” Ethan said.
I looked at him.
“I’m trying to understand why you’re standing there asking me for an explanation when your mother broke into my past and turned it into a weapon.””
Diane scoffed.
“Always changing the subject.””
“No.””
I held up the folder.
“I’m changing the subject from a lie to the truth.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Claire, I need to know.””
His voice wasn’t angry.
That almost hurt more.
He sounded scared.
I closed my eyes.
Because this was the conversation I had hoped I would never have.
Not with him.
Not with anyone.
“My first husband hurt me.””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You know the simple version.””
The kitchen became silent.
Diane watched me carefully.
I could tell she wanted me to break.
She wanted me to look guilty.
But I wasn’t.
I was tired.
Tired of protecting people who didn’t protect me.
“My ex-husband wasn’t just cheating.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
I looked down at the report.
“He was controlling.””
Diane immediately interrupted.
“Oh, here we go.””
I ignored her.
“He monitored my phone. He controlled my money. He told me who I could talk to.””
Ethan’s face slowly changed.
“That’s not what my mother said.””
I looked at him.
“Exactly.””
Diane stepped forward.
“He says you exaggerated everything.””
I turned toward her.
“Of course he does.””
She smiled.
“Convenient.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“But I have proof.””
I grabbed the folder.
“Do you want to know why I withdrew my statement?””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
“Because he threatened me.””
The room went still.
“He told me if I went through with it, he would ruin my life.””
Ethan stared at me.
“He threatened you?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
I looked at him.
“Because when I met you, I wanted a new life.””
“And I deserved to know.””
The words hurt because they were true.
Maybe I should have told him more.
Maybe I should have trusted him enough to share the ugly parts of my past.
But I never expected my past to become a weapon.
“I was afraid,” I whispered.
Ethan looked away.
Diane shook her head.
“More excuses.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew.””
She froze.
“You knew what happened.””
Her expression changed slightly.
“You talked to him.””
Ethan looked at his mother.
“What?””
Diane didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“My ex-husband contacted you, didn’t he?””
Silence.
That silence was enough.
Ethan looked shocked.
“Mom?””
Diane’s face hardened.
“He told me the truth.””
“No,” I said.
“He told you his version.””
“He showed me evidence.””
“What evidence?””
She didn’t answer.
I laughed quietly.
“Exactly.””
Ethan looked between us.
“Did you talk to him?””
Diane looked annoyed.
“That’s not the point.””
“It is the point.””
For the first time, Ethan raised his voice.
“Did you talk to Claire’s ex-husband?””
Diane looked away.
“Yes.””
The answer landed like a punch.
Ethan stepped back.
“Why?””
“Because someone needed to find out who she really was.””
I stared at her.
“Who I really was?””
Diane walked closer.
“You think everyone believes your innocent act?””
“My innocent act?””
“Yes.””
She pointed at me.
“You walked into this family and slowly separated Ethan from us.””
“No.””
“You did.””
“No, Diane.””
I shook my head.
“You couldn’t accept that your son built a life with someone else.””
Her face turned red.
“Don’t talk about things you don’t understand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
The two of us stared at each other.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Stop.””
Neither of us moved.
He looked at his mother.
“Did you create those custody papers because of this?””
Diane didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Finally, she said,
“I was protecting you.””
Ethan looked devastated.
“From my wife?””
“From a woman who lies.””
I watched him process that.
The worst part was seeing him realize something I had known for years.
His mother wasn’t protecting him.
She was controlling him.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
I looked down.
This time it wasn’t a picture.
It was a voice recording.
From an unknown number.
The message only said:
*“Play this if you want to know what Diane told your husband about Lily.””*
My hands went cold.
I looked at Ethan.
He noticed my expression.
“What is it?””
I didn’t answer.
Because suddenly I wasn’t afraid of losing my marriage anymore.
I was afraid of what someone had been planning for my daughter.
May you like
I pressed play.
And Diane’s voice filled the room.
