Chapter 11: The Enemy Who Was Never Alone

The letter fell from my hand.

Ethan picked it up.

His eyes moved across the page.

The longer he read, the more his expression changed.

Anger.

Confusion.

Disbelief.

“No,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked at the letter again.

“My mother contacted him.””

I nodded.

“We already know that.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

He looked at me.

“She contacted him before she contacted me.””

The room went silent.

The detective took a step closer.

“Mr. Morgan, are you saying your mother was working with your wife’s ex-husband?””

Ethan stared at the paper.

“I don’t know.””

But he did.

We all did.

The pieces were finally connecting.

Diane didn’t discover a secret.

She created one.

She didn’t find my past.

She searched for a way to use it.

“She wanted me to look guilty,” I whispered.

Ethan looked at me.

“Claire…”

“She knew exactly what she was doing.””

Detective Harris carefully placed the letter into an evidence sleeve.

“We need to ask your mother some questions.””

I laughed quietly.

“She won’t tell you anything.””

The detective looked at me.

“Why?””

“Because Diane never admits she’s wrong.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I defended her.””

I looked at him.

He looked broken.

“I spent years thinking you were the problem.””

I didn’t answer.

Because there was nothing I could say.

A person could apologize for a mistake.

But how do you apologize for letting someone rewrite your entire family?

When we returned home, Diane was waiting.

She stood in the driveway.

Like she knew we would come back.

Ethan stepped out first.

“Mom.””

Her expression changed when she saw the police folder in his hand.

“What did you find?””

Not “Are you okay?””

Not “What happened?””

What did you find.

That told me everything.

“You knew,” Ethan said.

Diane looked at him.

“Knew what?””

“That Claire’s ex-husband was involved.””

Her face remained calm.

Too calm.

“I knew he was dangerous.””

“You worked with him.””

The accusation finally made her react.

“That’s ridiculous.””

“Then explain the photos.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“What photos?””

I stepped forward.

“The ones you took at the hospital.””

For the first time, Diane looked nervous.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I held up the photograph.

“I understand perfectly.””

Diane looked at Ethan.

“You’re believing her again?””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“This isn’t about Claire.””

That surprised her.

“This is about you.””

She stared at him.

“You’re my son.””

“Yes.””

“And you’re choosing her?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

His voice became quiet.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

The words seemed to hurt her.

Because Diane had always believed she owned his loyalty.

She had mistaken love for control.

“You’ll regret this,” she said.

Ethan looked at her.

“Maybe.””

A pause.

“But not because I trusted my wife.””

Diane looked at me.

“You think you won?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t feel like I won anything.

My daughter was hurt.

My marriage was damaged.

My trust was broken.

Then Diane smiled.

A small, cold smile.

“You still don’t know everything.””

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at me.

“Ask your wife why she never told you about the second man at the hospital.””

My heart stopped.

Ethan turned toward me.

“What second man?””

I felt the ground disappear beneath me.

Because I knew exactly what she was talking about.

Someone I had spent seven years trying to forget.

Someone who had nothing to do with Lily.

Someone who appeared the night everything changed.

I looked at Ethan.

“I can explain.””

Diane laughed.

“There it is.””

I ignored her.

“Ethan, please listen.””

His face was full of questions.

“Who was the second man?””

I opened my mouth.

But before I could answer, my phone rang.

A number I didn’t recognize.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Claire.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Seven years had passed.

But I would recognize it anywhere.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who knows what really happened the night Lily was born.””

I couldn’t move.

Ethan watched my face.

“Claire?””

The man continued.

“And if you don’t tell Ethan the truth…”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What?””

May you like

His voice became colder.

“I will.””
