Chapter 12: The Man From That Night
I couldn’t speak.
The voice on the phone belonged to a memory I had buried so deeply that I convinced myself it no longer existed.
But memories don’t disappear.
They wait.
“Who is this?”” I asked again.
The man laughed softly.
“You know exactly who I am.””
My heart pounded.
“No.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Claire, you always were good at pretending things didn’t happen.””
I stepped away from Ethan.
“Where did you get this number?””
“I have always known where to find you.””
The words sent a chill through me.
“Stop.””
Ethan stood.
“Who is it?””
I couldn’t answer.
The man continued.
“You should tell your husband before someone else does.””
Then the call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Ethan walked closer.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“I need to tell you something.””
His face tightened.
“I know.””
The sadness in his voice hurt.
“I’m listening.””
I sat down.
Because my legs suddenly didn’t feel strong enough to hold me.
“Seven years ago, when Lily was born, there was another person at the hospital.””
Ethan waited.
“My ex-husband.””
He nodded.
“And?””
I swallowed.
“Someone else.””
“Who?””
I looked down.
“His name was Mark.””
Ethan frowned.
“Who is Mark?””
I closed my eyes.
“Someone who helped me.””
The words sounded strange.
Because they were incomplete.
And I knew Ethan heard that.
“How?””
I took a breath.
“After I left my ex-husband, I had nowhere to go.””
Ethan listened.
“Mark was a friend of my brother. He helped me find an apartment. He helped me get a job.””
“Was he your boyfriend?””
“No.””
My answer was immediate.
Because it was the truth.
“But your mother thinks…”
“My mother thinks whatever helps her story.””
Ethan looked away.
“Why didn’t you tell me about him?””
I struggled to answer.
Because the real answer was complicated.
“Because after Lily was born, something happened.””
“What?””
I looked toward the window.
“My ex-husband attacked him.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“What?””
“He thought Mark was helping me leave.””
“Was he?””
“Yes.””
I nodded.
“He was.””
A silence followed.
Then Ethan asked the question I feared.
“What happened?””
I closed my eyes.
“Mark disappeared.””
“Disappeared?””
“He left town.””
“Why?””
I looked at him.
“Because my ex-husband threatened him.””
Ethan sat down slowly.
“And Diane knew?””
I nodded.
“She must have.””
The realization hit both of us.
Diane wasn’t just collecting information.
She had been collecting people.
Everyone connected to my past.
Everyone who could be used against me.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Mark.
A photo appeared.
A photograph of a document.
I opened it.
And my blood froze.
It was a signed statement.
From my ex-husband.
The title read:
*CONFIDENTIAL PATERNITY AGREEMENT*
I looked closer.
The date.
The signatures.
My ex-husband’s name.
And another signature.
Diane’s.
Ethan saw it.
“What is that?””
I handed him the phone.
He read it.
Then looked at me.
“My mother signed a paternity agreement?””
“I don’t know.””
“But she did.””
His voice was shaking.
The document showed something I had never seen before.
A private agreement.
A plan.
A conversation between my ex-husband and Diane.
At the bottom was one handwritten note.
*“Once Ethan believes Claire cannot be trusted, custody will become simple.””*
Ethan stood up.
“No.””
I looked at him.
He stared at the screen.
“My mother planned this.””
“Yes.””
“For years?””
I didn’t answer.
Because we both knew.
Then another message appeared.
From Mark.
Only five words.
*“She has the original records.””*
I felt cold.
“What records?””
Ethan looked at me.
The fear in his eyes returned.
“The birth records.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Mark sent another message.
This one was longer.
*“Diane has been searching for one missing page from the hospital file. If she finds it, she believes she can prove Lily belongs to someone else.””*
Ethan looked at me.
“But Lily is my daughter.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
Then the final message arrived.
And this time, even I was afraid to open it.
Because the attachment was a scanned hospital document.
A page I had never seen before.
The missing page.
The one Diane had been looking for.
I opened it.
And at the bottom of the page was a name.
Not my ex-husband’s.
Not Ethan’s.
Someone else’s.
I whispered,
“That’s impossible.””
Ethan looked over my shoulder.
“Who is that?””
I stared at the name.
The name of the man listed as Lily’s biological father.

And I realized Diane’s biggest secret wasn’t that she had lied.
It was that she had discovered a truth I had never known.
