Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

I couldn’t speak.

The words repeated in my head.

The truth that Ethan was never supposed to find out.

I looked at my husband.

He was watching me.

Waiting for an explanation.

But I didn’t have one.

Not yet.

“Rachel,” I whispered, “what are you talking about?””

Her voice cracked.

“Claire, I should have told you she contacted me.””

“Yes, you should have.””

“I thought she was just trying to understand your past.””

“She was trying to destroy my family.””

“I know that now.””

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me everything.””

Behind me, I heard Ethan say,

“Who is it?””

I ignored him.

Rachel took a deep breath.

“When Diane came to my house, she already knew about your first marriage.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“She showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“She had copies of things from your divorce.””

My stomach turned.

Diane had been digging.

For months.

Maybe years.

“She asked about Lily’s birth.””

“And what did you say?””

Rachel was quiet.

That silence hurt.

“Rachel.””

“I told her there was something unusual.””

I gripped the phone.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the hospital made a mistake.””

I felt the room disappear.

“What mistake?””

“Claire…”

“Tell me.””

Rachel exhaled.

“When Lily was born, there was another baby in the maternity ward with a similar name.””

My heart pounded.

“No.””

“It was corrected quickly.””

“Rachel.””

“Claire, listen to me. Lily is your daughter.””

I almost stopped breathing.

“But?””

“But Ethan’s name was not on the first paperwork.””

I looked at Ethan.

He was still watching me.

“What?””

Rachel continued.

“Your ex-husband arrived before Ethan did.””

My fingers went numb.

That memory came back.

The hospital room.

The exhaustion.

The fear.

My ex-husband standing at the doorway.

Demanding answers.

Demanding control.

“I thought that was over.””

“It isn’t.””

“What did Diane find?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“She found the original paperwork.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because she believes it proves Ethan has a reason to leave you.””

I looked toward Diane.

She was still standing there.

Still confident.

Still waiting for me to collapse.

“She’s insane.””

“I know.””

“No, Rachel.””

My voice shook.

“She hurt Lily.””

Rachel went silent.

“She did what?””

I realized then.

Rachel didn’t know.

I looked at my daughter’s bedroom door upstairs.

“She grabbed Lily.””

“What?””

“By the hair.””

Rachel gasped.

“Claire…”

“I’m done protecting people.””

I hung up.

Slowly.

Then I turned around.

Ethan was staring at me.

“Tell me.””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I knew whatever I said next would change everything.

“Ethan, when Lily was born…”

He waited.

“My ex-husband came to the hospital.””

His expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted control.””

“Control over what?””

“Everything.””

I walked toward the table.

“When I left him, he refused to accept it.””

Ethan listened.

“He showed up at the hospital and demanded to be involved.””

“Was he Lily’s father?””

The question hurt.

But I understood why he asked.

I looked directly at him.

“Yes.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

A wave of relief crossed his face.

Then confusion.

“Then why did my mother say…”

“Because she found incomplete paperwork.””

Diane suddenly spoke.

“And you expect him to believe that?””

I turned.

“You’ve been listening the entire time.””

“Yes.””

She looked at Ethan.

“Ask yourself why Claire hid this.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

I stepped toward him.

“I didn’t hide Lily.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You hid that your ex-husband was involved.””

“I was trying to protect us.””

“Or yourself?””

The words hurt.

But this time, I didn’t break.

Because I finally understood.

Diane’s plan was never just about making him angry.

She wanted him to doubt.

A person who doubts can be controlled.

I looked at Ethan.

“You need to decide something.””

“What?””

“Do you believe the woman who raised you?””

He looked down.

“Or do you believe the woman who has been raising your daughter?””

No one spoke.

Then Lily appeared at the top of the stairs.

Her small voice cut through the silence.

“Mommy?””

I immediately turned.

“Sweetheart, why are you awake?””

She looked frightened.

“Are you and Daddy fighting because of me?””

My heart broke.

I ran upstairs and hugged her.

“No.””

“But Grandma said…”

I froze.

“What did Grandma say?””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said Daddy might leave because of me.””

I turned slowly.

Diane’s face changed.

For the first time…

She looked caught.

Ethan looked at his mother.

“What did you tell my daughter?””
