Chapter 6: The Recording That Exposed Her
The first sound was static.
Then a familiar voice.
Diane.
My blood ran cold.
“Ethan, you need to understand something.””
The recording continued.
“You can’t keep letting Claire make every decision.””
I looked at Ethan.
He was frozen.
He recognized his mother’s voice.
Everyone did.
Diane took a step forward.
“Turn that off.””
I held the phone tighter.
“No.””
“Claire.””
“No.””
The recording continued.
“Lily is young. She can still be influenced.””
My heart stopped.
Ethan whispered,
“What is this?””
I didn’t answer.
I just listened.
Diane’s voice became clearer.
“If you wait too long, Claire will make Lily believe this family doesn’t matter.””
The room went silent.
Then another voice.
Ethan.
His voice.
“When did you start thinking she was dangerous?””
Diane replied,
“When I saw how she reacted when I tried to correct Lily.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Correct.
That was the word she used.
Not hurt.
Not scare.
Correct.
The recording continued.
“She needs to learn that Claire isn’t always right.””
Ethan’s voice sounded uncomfortable.
“Mom, she’s my daughter.””
“And she’s my granddaughter.””
A pause.
Then Diane said something that made my entire body go cold.
“Ethan, if something happens, you need to be prepared.””
Prepared.
For what?
The recording ended.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Just silence.
I lowered the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Ethan looked at his mother.
“Did you say those things?””
Diane crossed her arms.
“I was worried.””
“That wasn’t an answer.””
“Yes.””
His face changed.
“You were trying to make me afraid of Claire?””
“No.””
“You told me she was unstable.””
“Because she is emotional.””
“You told me she might turn Lily against me.””
“Because she already separates you from us.””
I watched Ethan.
The man who had defended his mother all night.
Now he looked lost.
“Mom…”
Diane’s expression softened.
A performance.
“I’m only trying to protect you.””
But this time, Ethan didn’t immediately believe her.
“I never asked you to investigate my wife.””
“I was helping.””
“You contacted her ex-husband.””
Silence.
“You created custody papers.””
Another silence.
“You attacked Lily.””
Diane’s face hardened.
“Don’t exaggerate.””
That sentence broke something in Ethan.
Because he had heard it.
He had finally heard it.
The same way she dismissed Lily’s pain.
The same way she dismissed mine.
I picked up my bag.
“I’m taking Lily.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Claire.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what happens with us after tonight.””
His face fell.
“But I know what happens next.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“My daughter sleeps somewhere safe.””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“I understand.””
I almost didn’t believe him.
Because hours ago, he had stood beside the woman who hurt our child.
Now he looked like someone realizing how much he had lost.
Diane stepped forward.
“You’re really going to walk away because of one mistake?””
I turned.
“One mistake?””
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“You grabbed a child by the hair.””
“She touched my cake.””
I felt anger rise again.
“It was frosting.””
“It was disrespect.””
“No.””
I looked directly at her.
“It was a seven-year-old girl being a seven-year-old girl.””
Diane’s face changed.
For the first time, I saw something behind her anger.
Fear.
A small crack in the confidence.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
I picked up the folder.
“Actually, I do.””
I walked toward the stairs.
Then Ethan stopped me.
“Claire.””
I turned.
He held something in his hand.
A second envelope.
Smaller than the first.
“I found this in my office last week.””
I stared at him.
“What is it?””
He looked ashamed.
“I didn’t open it.””
“Why are you giving it to me now?””
His eyes moved toward his mother.
“Because I think I should have.””
My heart started beating faster.
I took the envelope.
There was no name on the front.
Only one sentence.
Written in handwriting I didn’t recognize.
*“The truth about Lily’s birth was never told to Ethan.””*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan’s face went pale.
“I don’t know.””
Diane suddenly stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
I held it away.
“No.””
For the first time all night, Diane looked genuinely afraid.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Afraid.
And that scared me more than anything she had done.
May you like
Because whatever was inside that envelope…
Diane didn’t want us to see it.
