Chapter 10: The Box Outside Diane’s House
The words didn’t make sense.
Photos of Lily.
Taken before she was born.
I stared at Ethan, waiting for him to explain.
But his face told me he couldn’t.
“What does that mean?””
He ended the call slowly.
“I don’t know.””
“Who was that?””
“The officer who responded.””
I felt a chill.
“Why would the police call you?””
Ethan looked down.
“Because my mother’s name was on the property records.””
Of course.
Everything came back to Diane.
The papers.
The recordings.
The lies.
Even now, somehow, she was still at the center of everything.
“What kind of photos?””
Ethan ran a hand through his hair.
“They didn’t say.””
“We need to see them.””
He hesitated.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice was firm.
“We are done letting your mother control the information.””
He nodded.
And for once, he didn’t argue.
The next morning, the house felt different.
Not peaceful.
Just quiet.
The kind of quiet that comes after something breaks and nobody knows if it can be repaired.
Lily sat at the kitchen table eating cereal.
Ethan sat across from her.
“I’m sorry about yesterday.””
Lily looked up.
“Are you mad at Grandma?””
Ethan paused.
“I’m disappointed.””
“Because she touched my cake?””
His eyes softened.
“Because she hurt you.””
Lily looked down at her bowl.
“I thought she didn’t like me.””
That sentence destroyed him.
I saw it happen.
The guilt.
The realization.
“She loves you,” Ethan said quietly.
But even he sounded unsure.
Lily didn’t answer.
Children knew when adults were pretending.
After breakfast, Ethan and I drove to the police station.
Neither of us spoke much.
We were both afraid of what we would find.
An officer met us near the front desk.
“Mr. Morgan?””
Ethan nodded.
“I’m Detective Harris.””
He led us into a small room.
On the table was a cardboard box.
Nothing about it looked important.
But my entire body reacted when I saw it.
“What is it?””
The detective opened a folder.
“This was found behind your mother’s property fence early this morning.””
Ethan frowned.
“Why would someone leave it there?””
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””
He looked at me.
“Are you Claire Morgan?””
“Yes.””
He studied my expression.
“You know what’s inside?””
“No.””
He opened the box.
The first thing inside was a photograph.
A hospital hallway.
My breath caught.
I recognized it immediately.
The hospital where Lily was born.
I picked up the photo.
My hands shook.
“Who took this?””
Detective Harris looked at the evidence notes.
“There was no name.””
Ethan picked up another.
This one showed me sitting in the hospital bed.
Holding newborn Lily.
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Ethan looked at me.
“What?””
“I never gave anyone permission to take this.””
The detective became more serious.
“There are more.””
He removed several photos.
All of them were from the same week.
The week Lily was born.
My recovery.
My hospital room.
My first days as a mother.
Someone had been watching.
Someone had been close.
Too close.
Then Ethan picked up the final photograph.
And his face changed.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
I took it from him.
The photo showed a man standing outside the hospital room.
My ex-husband.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
Behind him was someone else.
Someone I knew.
Someone who shouldn’t have been there.
Diane.
I felt the room spin.
“Why was she there?””
Ethan looked at the photograph.
His voice was barely a whisper.
“My mother knew your ex-husband.””
The detective looked between us.
“Did you know this?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Ethan looked devastated.
Another piece of his mother’s secret life had fallen apart.
Detective Harris pointed to the photo.
“Do you know what happened after this picture was taken?””
I stared at Diane’s face.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t surprised.
She was watching.
Like she was waiting.
“I don’t know.””
The detective reached into the box.
“There’s one more thing.””
He pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Not printed.
Written.
My blood went cold.
“That wasn’t there before,” Ethan said.
The detective looked confused.
“It was inside the box.””
I took the envelope.
I didn’t want to open it.
But I did.
Inside was a letter.
Only four sentences.
The first sentence made my hands go numb.
*Claire, if you’re reading this, Diane already told you I was the problem.*
I stopped breathing.
Because I knew the handwriting.
I knew the person who wrote it.
My ex-husband.
The second sentence was worse.
*But the truth is, Diane was the one who came to me first.*
I looked at Ethan.
His face went pale.
May you like
And the third sentence destroyed everything I thought I knew.
*She didn’t want to take Lily away from you. She wanted to prove Lily was never yours.*
