Chapter 9: The Name I Never Expected

I stood there waiting.

Waiting for Daniel to say a name.

Waiting for him to finally explain the nightmare my life had become.

But he hesitated.

Again.

And this time, I was done waiting.

“Say it.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Sarah…”

“Say the name.””

His lips moved.

But before he could speak, his phone rang.

We both looked down.

The name appeared on the screen.

Evelyn.

I almost laughed.

Of course.

Of course she would call now.

Daniel reached for the phone.

I stopped him.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Sarah.””

“Put it on speaker.””

His face tightened.

“That’s not necessary.””

I smiled sadly.

“Exactly.””

The phone continued ringing.

Finally, he answered.

“Mom?””

Evelyn’s voice came through.

“Is she there?””

Daniel froze.

I looked at him.

“She asked if I’m here.””

He didn’t respond.

Evelyn continued.

“I know she knows.””

My stomach dropped.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“What are you talking about?””

“You failed to keep control of the situation.””

Control.

That word again.

I stepped closer to the phone.

“Hello, Evelyn.””

Silence.

Then a slow breath.

“Sarah.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You always were more difficult than I expected.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You destroyed my baby shower.””

“I corrected a mistake.””

My hands curled into fists.

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

She didn’t hesitate.

“You were never the right person for Daniel.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Mom, stop.””

She ignored him.

“You think you won because you found some papers?””

I looked at Daniel.

“What papers?””

Evelyn laughed softly.

“You really haven’t told her everything.””

My heart dropped.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Mom.””

She continued.

“Tell her, Daniel.””

Nobody spoke.

“Tell her who you were supposed to marry.””

I felt cold.

The room became silent.

Then Evelyn said the name.

A name I never expected.

A name that made Daniel’s entire body tense.

“Tell her about Sarah’s own sister.””

My breath stopped.

My sister.

No.

That wasn’t possible.

I looked at Daniel.

“Lily?””

He immediately shook his head.

“No.””

But his reaction came too fast.

Too desperate.

And Evelyn noticed.

“See?””

Her voice became almost satisfied.

“He still protects her.””

I felt the world tilt.

“What is she talking about, Daniel?””

He looked broken.

“Sarah, it’s not what you think.””

I stepped back.

“Then explain.””

He couldn’t.

That was the problem.

He couldn’t.

Evelyn spoke again.

“Your husband didn’t just betray you with another woman.””

My heart pounded.

“He betrayed you with the person closest to you.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then at the phone.

And for the first time since my baby shower…

I felt something stronger than anger.

I felt fear.

Because if Evelyn was telling the truth…

May you like

The betrayal wasn’t coming from outside my family.

It had been standing beside me the entire time.
