Chapter 12: Evelyn’s Final Move

“Evelyn Carter.””

The doctor’s words echoed in my head.

I didn’t respond.

I couldn’t.

Because somehow, even after everything, I was still shocked by how far she would go.

“She requested information about my pregnancy?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The doctor hesitated.

“I cannot discuss private medical details without proper authorization.””

“But you called me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A pause.

“Because the request contained unusual information.””

My heart tightened.

“What kind of information?””

The doctor lowered her voice.

“Someone was trying to verify whether the child’s father was listed correctly.””

I closed my eyes.

The pieces connected.

Evelyn didn’t just want to control Daniel.

She wanted to destroy my position as his wife.

She wanted to make me look like a liar.

“Thank you for telling me.””

After the call ended, I stood there for a long time.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“You knew.””

His face changed.

“What?””

“You knew she was investigating the baby.””

“No.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked broken.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I stared at him.

“Shame doesn’t protect me.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice became quiet.

“You keep saying you know, but you never act like you know.””

Daniel sat down.

“I made mistakes.””

I looked at him.

“Your mother made mistakes.””

I pointed at him.

“You made choices.””

He looked like he wanted to argue.

But he couldn’t.

Because he knew I was right.

The next day, I met with my attorney again.

Mr. Collins listened carefully.

Then he placed several documents on the table.

“Sarah, there’s something important.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He opened the first file.

“Evelyn wasn’t only trying to remove you from the house.””

I already knew there was more.

“What else?””

“She was trying to create a custody argument.””

My heart stopped.

“She wanted custody?””

“Yes.””

I stared at the papers.

“How?””

“She was building a story.””

“What story?””

“That you were unstable. That your family background was questionable. That Daniel was the more responsible parent.””

I almost laughed.

The woman who smashed cake into my face wanted to call me unstable.

The woman who attacked my unborn daughter wanted to claim she was protecting family.

Mr. Collins continued.

“But there’s a problem for her.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She left evidence.””

“What kind?””

He turned a document toward me.

“Messages.””

My eyes moved across the page.

There were conversations between Evelyn and Daniel.

Not rumors.

Not assumptions.

Actual words.

I read them.

“Sarah is emotional. She will collapse after the baby arrives.””

Another message:

“Daniel needs to act before she gains more control.””

My hands shook.

But then I saw the final message.

The one that made everything change.

It was from Daniel.

To Evelyn.

And it was recent.

Only two days before the baby shower.

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

Because I couldn’t believe it.

Daniel had written:

“I can’t do this anymore. I’m telling Sarah everything.””

I looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Mr. Collins leaned forward.

“It means your husband may have changed his mind.””

I stared at the message.

A part of me wanted to feel relief.

But another part remembered the silence.

The cake.

The lies.

The pain.

Before I could say anything, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Sarah.””

His voice sounded different.

Broken.

“I need you to come home.””

“Why?””

A long pause.

Then he said:

“Because my mother is here.””

My heart tightened.

“What does she want?””

Daniel whispered:

“She knows I found the evidence.””

I stood.

“And?””

His voice dropped.

“She’s threatening to destroy everyone if I don’t choose her side.””

I grabbed my coat.

Because I knew something.

The final battle was no longer about the house.

Or the money.

Or the baby shower.

May you like

It was about whether Daniel would finally choose the truth…

Or lose everything trying to protect the person who controlled him his entire life.
