Chapter 5: The Money He Hid From Me
I didn’t cry.
That surprised me.
A few months ago, I would have cried.
I would have asked Daniel why.
I would have searched for excuses.
Maybe he was pressured.
Maybe he was confused.
Maybe there was some explanation that could save the man I married.
But after that day, after the cake, after the silence, after the documents…
I stopped looking for reasons to defend him.
I started looking for the truth.
“How much?”” I asked.
Daniel looked away.
“How much did you send her?””
“Sarah…”
“How much?””
Rebecca answered quietly.
“Twenty-five thousand dollars.””
I closed my eyes.
Twenty-five thousand.
While I was preparing a nursery.
While I was buying tiny clothes.
While I was planning a future for our daughter.
My husband was secretly moving money to his mother.
“Why?””
Daniel finally spoke.
“She needed help.””
I laughed.
A quiet, painful laugh.
“Your mother needed help?””
“Yes.””
“And you hid it from me?””
“I knew you wouldn’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I understand perfectly.””
He stepped closer.
“You’re twisting this.””
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
He sounded desperate now.
“My mother was stressed. She was scared about the future.””
“The future?””
I pointed toward my stomach.
“Our daughter is the future.””
His eyes dropped.
For a moment, I thought maybe he finally understood.
Then he said:
“My mother had dreams.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She wanted the family to continue.””
I stared at him.
“Our daughter is not enough for her.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
And that was the moment something inside me changed.
Not because he betrayed me.
Because he allowed me to realize I had been fighting for a place in a family that never wanted me.
Rebecca quietly picked up her bag.
“I should go.””
I looked at her.
“Wait.””
She stopped.
“Why did you really come here?””
She looked surprised.
“What do you mean?””
“You could have stayed away.””
Her expression softened.
“I did stay away.””
She glanced at Daniel.
“For years.””
Then she looked back at me.
“But when I saw what Evelyn was doing to you, I remembered how alone I felt.””
I swallowed.
“You wanted to warn me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She smiled sadly.
“Because nobody warned me.””
After she left, Daniel and I sat in silence.
The house felt enormous.
Like we were strangers sharing a space.
Finally, he spoke.
“Sarah, I love you.””
I looked at him.
“Do you?””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let your mother humiliate me?””
“I froze.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You chose.””
He looked hurt.
But I didn’t look away.
“You chose your mother.””
He whispered:
“That’s not fair.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“Fair?””
I stood.
“My mother-in-law destroyed my baby shower.””
“I know.””
“She insulted our daughter.””
“I know.””
“She told me to leave my own home.””
“I know.””
“And you’re worried about fairness?””
Daniel had no response.
The next morning, I went to my attorney’s office.
I needed to know exactly what I was dealing with.
Not emotions.
Not promises.
Facts.
My attorney, Mr. Collins, looked through the documents.
Then he leaned back.
“Sarah, there is more.””
I frowned.
“More?””
He nodded.
“Daniel didn’t just transfer money.””
My hands tightened around my coffee cup.
“What else?””
He turned the computer toward him.
“There was an attempt to change your legal ownership.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t.””
My heart started pounding.
“What are you saying?””
He clicked another file.
“This request wasn’t made because of Evelyn.””
I stared at him.
“Then why?””
He looked directly at me.
“Because Daniel was preparing for a divorce.””
I felt the room spin.
“No.””
Mr. Collins didn’t look away.
“The paperwork was started two months ago.””
Two months.
When I was decorating the nursery.
When I was telling Daniel how excited I was to become a mother.
“When was he planning to file?””
My attorney hesitated.
Then answered.
“The day after your baby was born.””
I couldn’t breathe.
Because suddenly, the cake wasn’t the beginning.
May you like
It was the final step of a plan.
And Daniel had never planned on staying.
