Chapter 4: The Woman At The Door
I stood frozen in the middle of my living room.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Daniel.
Not the woman standing outside the door.
The only sound was the quiet ticking of the clock on the wall.
Daniel looked at me.
“Sarah, don’t open that door.””
That sentence alone told me everything.
Because innocent people don’t panic when someone from their past shows up.
They explain.
They reassure.
They don’t beg you to stay away.
I walked toward the door.
“Sarah.””
I ignored him.
My hand reached for the handle.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Please.””
I turned around.
“Please what?””
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
That hurt more than an answer.
I opened the door.
A woman stood there.
She looked to be in her early forties.
She had tired eyes, a simple jacket, and the kind of expression people have when they’ve carried a secret for too long.
She looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“I’m sorry,” she said softly.
I didn’t move.
“Who are you?””
Her eyes dropped.
“My name is Rebecca.””
The name hit me again.
The same name from the documents.
The same name Daniel refused to explain.
I stepped back.
“Come inside.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“Sarah—”
I looked at him.
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“No more protecting me from the truth.””
Rebecca walked inside slowly.
She looked around the house.
Then she whispered something that made my chest tighten.
“I never thought I would see this place.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
That was enough.
“Daniel?””
He remained silent.
Rebecca took a deep breath.
“I used to own part of this house.””
The room went quiet.
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
“What?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Rebecca, stop.””
She looked at him.
“You had years to tell her.””
Then she turned back to me.
“Sarah, I’m not here to hurt you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That’s funny. Everyone says that right before they do.””
She accepted the words without defending herself.
“I understand why you don’t trust me.””
She reached into her bag and pulled out a folder.
I immediately became tense.
No more surprises.
No more hidden papers.
“What is that?””
“Proof.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Don’t.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“You keep saying that.””
She placed the folder on the table.
“But you never stopped to think about what happens when the truth comes out.””
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside were copies of old property records.
My eyes scanned the pages.
Then I saw it.
Rebecca’s name.
And Daniel’s.
Together.
I looked up.
“Explain.””
Daniel sat down.
For the first time since I knew him, he looked small.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just caught.
“Before you and I met,” he said quietly, “Rebecca and I were engaged.””
I stared at him.
The room felt like it had lost oxygen.
“You were engaged?””
“Yes.””
Rebecca looked down.
“But we ended things.””
“Why?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Rebecca spoke.
“Because his mother found out I couldn’t give her the future she wanted.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca swallowed.
“She wanted a son.””
The same words.
The same obsession.
The same cruel expectation.
I looked at Daniel.
“Your mother did this before?””
He didn’t answer.
Rebecca nodded.
“Evelyn blamed me for everything. She told Daniel he needed someone who could continue the family name.””
I felt sick.
“And you let her?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I was younger.””
I shook my head.
“You weren’t a child.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I made the wrong choices.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“You didn’t just make choices. You lied.””
I looked at the documents again.
“Why is your name still connected to this house?””
Rebecca took a breath.
“Because Daniel convinced me to sign away my rights.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?””
He rubbed his face.
“Because my mother wanted control.””
I stared at him.
“And now she’s doing the same thing to me.””
Silence.
That was the worst part.
Because nobody could deny it.
Rebecca stood.
“I came here because I found something else.””
My eyes moved to her.
“What?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“A bank record.””
Daniel stood immediately.
“Rebecca.””
She continued.
“A transfer made after you became pregnant.””
My heart started racing.
“What transfer?””
Rebecca reached into her bag again.
“This one.””
She placed another document on the table.
I looked down.
And saw a number.
A very large number.
Then I saw the name attached.
Daniel.
But the destination account belonged to someone else.
Someone I recognized.
My mother-in-law.
Evelyn.
I looked up slowly.
“Daniel…”
May you like
He didn’t speak.
And that silence answered everything.
